It needs a virtual audience and the ability to record their laughter and include.

Better no audience than one reacting to a recording, I think. .

Not so much TV comedy, but I think The Now Show on Radio 4 is still doing very well without its usual studio audience. Yesterday's episode featured an audience clapping and cheering as the April Fools. I've never watched HIGNFY though, so I don't know if the style of comedy is different on HIGNFY than The Now Show.

Completely different formats. HIGNFY is like The News Quiz

One thing I've noticed with home-recording of shows is that the picture quality is pretty good, but some of the audio is awful. HIGNFY is a good example - Stef's audio was decent but then she was presumably using the same equipment she's been using for her own programme. The others were all over the place, both in terms of quality and level. I was watching Stephen Colbert interview John Oliver the other night and not only was the audio quality rubbish but the tone they used to beep out the profanities was a lot louder.

Radio and podcasts don't seem to have a problem with this, presumably they send off microphones which are the same sort of standard as the telly people do cameras.

Mind you....

I noticed that Steph’s camera was better quality too. Again, perhaps because she has kit there?

I wonder how much it would cost to buy either a lapel mic or even just a desk mic so that they are not relying on a computer mic.

Peanuts: https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=lapel+mic&rh=n%3A10706421&ref=nb_sb_noss

YouTubers have figured this out for years, hence why the production standards have jumped within 10 years. The set up feels very 10 years ago, but can't be helped because of the situation

Wonder if Steph was always due to host or whether she was booked partly because they knew there was a set up already in place. And how this will play out for the rest of the series.

I'd wondered about that as well, especially as she's just left the BBC so was a bit of an odd choice. I see Stephen Magnan and Victoria Coren Mitchell are next up, I can see it being established hosts for the whole series, and not many new faces.

It was struggling for a while, very few listeners and a few months back they frequency swapped from one of the best MW frequencies in London to one that only covers North Nondon presumably to save money

I wonder if that it's a way of closing it down without losing face?

Haven't they pretty much rotated through the same faces for years now?

The vast majority do tend to be old reliables but they try and get a couple of new faces in the hosts chair every series. Last year off the top of my head Charlie Brooker, Adil Ray and David Dimbleby were all first time hosts.
