Tonight's local news on WCBS in New York was produced by KCBS in Los Angeles after some CBS staffers tested positive for Covid-19. Here's the beginning of the 11 p.m. news:

How have they pulled that off technically? Is there a spare studio in LA and they have been able to pull in additional staff or is it pre recorded?

Usually at 8pm PT/11pm ET, that studio would be in use for KCAL 9 News at 8pm, so my thinking is that KCAL 9 was decamped to the CBSN Los Angeles studio, which would be simulcasting those bulletins anyway, freeing up the main studio for CBS New York to use.
How have they pulled that off technically? Is there a spare studio in LA and they have been able to pull in additional staff or is it pre recorded?

They used all the WCBS branding and graphics. Since the CBS O&O group shares graphics and music and everything it wouldnt have been a stretch to accomplish this. Likely all the playout came from the gallery at CBS Broadcasting Center in LA. Pat Harvey did a great job anchoring. I like how she opened the show. Basically saying: Im just anchoring the stories from LA, but YOUR local reporters are still in YOUR neighbourhood reporting YOUR stories.
Pat is a consummate professional and she pulled if off great.

KCAL 9 still has their old studio from around 14 years ago, and the last time they used that set was on the morning of both the Grammys and the death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and the other people on the helicopter. So they might as well have used that set.
