At LAST!

As much as I used to love TV Ark and get excited when there was an update, I’ve become used to the fact that it’s not there and if I want to reminisce in an old title sequence, you’ll find full shows are on YouTube / DailyMotion.

You may also find more episodes, maybe a full series or if you’re lucky, comments from people who worked on the show, contestants experiences or other titbits.

Yep, exactly as I said the other day, the likes of YouTube and Twitter provide a lot more than a traditional site ever could. Twitter in particular is better for the more quirky funny stuff with a bit of an attitude.

A site like TV Ark has its place - as an occasional reference for us enthusiasts and as an interesting nostalgia site for those who aren't to stumble across.

However I can't help thinking that with their repeated day 1 relaunches over the years they've somewhat missed the boat. From what I saw in the brief few minutes the site was online as flashy and slick as it was it felt a bit old hat.

As someone who's been watching old clips and contributing to the TV pres 'community' for 25 years I can't see what it has for me. It'll be nice to have it back online, but in the way I find it nice to have Blue Peter on TV still, I never watch it, but glad it's there

I’m sure the info is here somewhere but I’m missing it (sorry!). Why did the site originally go offline? Was there a data loss or similar?

I go to any other pres site, I click a video, it plays, on the same page in the same window with the other content still there, no silly gif, no barriers. Thats what I'd love TVArk to be like!

I think that’s the issue. Technology and online video delivery has moved on so much since the redesign was promised, when I got into it last night it still looked like something designed in Microsoft Frontpage with dodgy gifs.

Yes I like the full shows on Youtube but sadly a lot of them disappear because of copyright. My particular area of interest is news and a user last year uploaded some great full Six O'Clock News programmes from the eighties sadly only to have them taken down.

To rebuild it. Not entirely sure why they couldn't have kept the old site up (but not developed it) while building the new one in the background.

Imagine not being able to fit into the deadline that you set yourself! In my humble opinion, if you set day X as your launch date, then you should launch it on day X! Or, you know, just don't give everyone high hopes about the launch date and take your time so you can iron out everything and release a properly working product (and fit into a deadline this time!).

I'm in two minds, as if this was a business - it would be seen as unprofessional. However I have to keep reminding myself that this is a hobby site so it takes even more time (and love) to sort out issues.

Everyone’s very humble opinions are starting to grate a bit now, for those of us who help and give their time with the site it’s becoming very dispiriting...

I appreciate a lot of hard work and dedication has gone into this site relaunch but I am really disappointed they haven't managed to relaunch it on the day advertised.

Sometimes, things don't happen as scheduled. Delays caused by problems are part of the things that can happen to everyone! Heck, even BBC 2 didn't start correctly on the scheduled day. Wink I'm just glad for the existence of TVArk and for its imminent recovery, and I'm thankful to the people involved in it.

Well that's not happened to anything in recent times. We all saw the inevitable problems, the inevitable happened. Unfortunate, slightly frustrating for some, but it is what it is.

Maybe I'm repeating myself here but I just don't understand this attitude. Clips on YouTube are rarely organised and are usually very long clips which you have to jump through to find the thing you want. I don't understand how anyone could look at SPARK and think 'this is old hat'… I'm just struggling to see how a TV Ark Twitter account, where so much will get lost, or get posted once and then forgotten, is superior to that experience. That's just me.

I wondered this too at first but when you think back to how the old site used a Flash video system, I can see why they decided to take it off entirely. I'm not sure I would have made that decision but I understand why they did.

Erm. They did launch on their launch date, they launched a beta site, but clearly there was more strain on the new site than they had expected or were hoping.

Personally I thought the site looked great, and it's obviously nearer to being finished than it is to being started, so I'm fine waiting for the bugs to be ironed out.
