Hasn't STV always done pretty well compared to Reporting Scotland due to it's more regional nature.

Yeah it always has done, but since the revamped format it's been steadily increasing.

So what they are doing of definitely working.

Ratings for the 24th of October...

Then ratings for the 4th of November...

Have STV stuck with the split presentation from Edinburgh and Glasgow or is it a gimmick which has quietly disappeared in the time since they launched it?

Still got it, and the ratings are actually increasing leaving Reporting Scotland way behind.

Surely the growing gap between STV News and Reporting Scotland should be a major concern for BBC Scotland (the division, not the channel)?

It is. A new presenter’s been hired, new theme and studio and the programme is featuring more reporters from The Nine to create a fresher feel. Sadly none of it has much impact. Ultimately the editorial decisions are to blame. Rep Scot feels sluggish, parochial and out of touch. The ratings will continue to fall for some time. Change is needed behind the scenes urgently.

The only time in recent memory when Reporting Scotland felt like it was being produced in the present was during last month's election bulletins from The Nine studio, when it felt like it had an identity of its own.

RS really needs to stop being treated as an extension to the English regions and go their own way editorially. BBC Scotland have shown how it can be done with The Nine.

For years the Reporting Scotland nightly running order has been:

1. Scottish Govt announcement
2. SNP story/something on independence
3. Glasgow-based crime story
4. Wildlife story from the Highlands
5. Celtic/Rangers
6. Something about Andy Murray
7. Weather

It’s sad but true! A lot of SNP supporters use it as an opportunity to attack perceived bias, but I think the reality is far more pathetic. I think the pen pusher management are just running the show in a formulaic fashion out of apathy. It must be incredibly frustrating for staff on the ground, particularly for the new recruits who joined the Nine. There’s now a wealth of talent at Pacific Quay. It’s about time they were given the freedom to flourish.

It is a bias, but it's not a political bias, it's more cultural. It is very much treating Scotland as a region, rather than a nation, and thus, Reporting Scotland does feel more parochial than STV News. The BBC should be re-evaluating the editorial content of Reporting Scotland, as that is the only way they are likely to change anything.

As of tonight, STV are opting out of the Network and bringing us an early evening edition of Scotland Tonight instead ITV's Tonight programme at 7:30pm.

Wonder if the viewers will tune in...
