You can indeed vote for your own country, presumably because even if they tried to prevent it online it would be too difficult to stop people getting round it by using VPNs. They scrapped televoting because it was so expensive so I'm not really sure what the alternative would be other than scrapping the public vote altogether. They tried that in 2016 but it really didn't work. It definitely needs some sort of public vote.

At least it's a bit more professional, they've stopped awarding everyone 12 points at the start of the voting now, I suspect the kids even saw through the motivation for it.

Well all that mattered was that Wales made an improvement on last year. Yes S4C have been airing these build-up shows for months, before finally selecting the final candidate and have been rewarded with an improvement of... ONE WHOLE PLACE!

It's a shame they threw her under the bus with such an awful song. They've had two good performers in a row lumbered with dire songs.

Watched the selection show last month and noticed that none of the entries showed any real charisma. They’ll really have to up their game if they want to do better.

Of course the Welsh entry is a little snookered from the start, being sung, for the right reasons I’ll agree, in Welsh. So 99.9999pct (probably greater) of the audience will be relying on phonic representation of the singer’s voice rather than understanding the actual lyrics being sung.

Exactly - makes it much trickier, though not impossible. In both the Junior and the main contest what proportion of winners have been in English since the rules were relaxed?

In the main contest there have only been two winners not in the English language since the language rule was abolished in 1999. The two winners were ‘Molitva’ in 2007 (Serbian) and ‘Amar pelos dois‘ in 2017 (Portuguese). Not sure about Junior Eurovision.

All counties have to sing 75% of their song in their own language so it's not exactly just a Welsh problem! Poland has done pretty decently with two winning songs largely sung in a language that's only an official language in Poland.

Presumably countries with more than one official language can choose which they wish to sing that 75% in? So the Welsh entry could legitimately be in English if they so wished.

It’s the S4C nature of the channel that would preclude that not the EBU, it would defeat the objectives of the channel.

Though interestingly they do an English language commentary on Red Button (which I think they also do for the Royal Welsh Show coverage?)
