Admittedly I don't have kids, but what was wrong with "'Time for Bed' said Zebedee" at 5:40... get them asleep before the bedtime hour

Very sad news about NR being scrapped. Can anyone answer a question. Was it Newsround that broke the news of the Challenger disaster? I ask because I have a vague memory of "Splash" on ITV handing over to ITN.

Yes the first news report on the disaster was Newsround. I remember it quite vividly as I was a space mad 10 year old and we were going to Florida a few months later and hoping to see a launch.

There's a brief clip of it on YouTube

I seem to recall, BBC 2 started to relay CNN's output for an hour or so from about 17:30 hrs ?

Interestingly Peter Snow says at the start of that clip that it happened 'about 25 minutes ago'. Challenger exploded at 16:38 GMT so it seems like the Newsnight Special was on air at about the same time as Newsround, which was on at 17:00

The BBC proposes to significantly reduce television news coverage aimed at younger audiences on the CBBC Channel, and divert funding to more online news content for younger viewers.

Part of the proposal could see the removal of the iconic teatime edition of (John Craven’s) Newsround.

Yet another institution being tossed on the scrap heap, or genuinely a sign of the times?

Who is going to read the additional online content?

The thing about Newsround is that it is shoved in kids faces, so they take notice.

Online it’ll be lost amongst all the clickbait headlines and stories

How long after the Challenger disaster was it that they started to put a CBBC ident in before Newsround to soften the gear change?

(And did somebody get the timings into Newsround wrong? That cue dot seemed a bit late)

I get the sentiment - kids aren't watching at 4pm, shouldn't be keeping something just for nostalgic purposes etc. But the risk is kids will cherry-pick topics they're already interested in, rather than a breadth of news. Wonder if there's the budget to have a presenter do a small bulletin online?

Really can't understand the ideas here of merging/joining with Newsbeat though. Two completely different audiences!
