What must be even more concerning than the painfully low ratings is the fact that they lost a sizeable chunk as the show went on, hitting a low of 2.8 million at one point.

So they've kept the old theme from 2004 as the bed for the results? Surely David Lowe could've created a new version?

HQ Version of the theme is here:

I’m not that convinced that overnight/live ratings matter to ITV or the show anymore. Yes, 2.8 is pretty poor for a live, Saturday night show (compared to Strictly), but the audience the show is aimed at seems to be strong. They claim that with all viewers consolidated it’s 7.5 million - I presume that includes ITV Hub views. That’s not bad at all in my opinion. I think we can all get caught up with overnight and live ratings but it must be doing something right ... Megan McKenna’s track from the show is currently number 2 on iTunes.

Live shows rated around the 5m mark in the officials last year - not good in anyone's eyes.

But, if it’s hitting the right audience the show wants (16-34), bringing in advertisers, strong on social media, iTunes charting songs etc .... then what’s the big deal? The X Factor’s target audience has changed over time.

It is all about perception and looking at the overnight ratings, it is a PR disaster for ITV who want to consider X Factor still as a big brand name for their channel.

When you have Strictly Come Dancing achieving 9 million viewers in the overnight ratings, and gaining more with consolidated figures and then X Factor struggles to pull in 3.5 million overnight - even with consolidated figures helping X Factor, the 9 million Vs 3.5 million is the figures which gets the headlines, and the consolidated figures are forgotten.

ITV need X Factor to do a bit more decent overnights, for PR reasons, commercially they are doing just fine at the moment.

A side note to this ... I wonder if Cowell regrets launching the show in the US? I can’t help but feel like the show would be different (and better rated) still today if the 2010 panel had continued into 2011 ....

Probably during an ad break.

Correct.

A source said: "We are thrilled with the audience reaction to our first live show, with The X Factor: Celebrity winning its slot among 16 to 34s by 137 per cent. The X Factor: Celebrity is currently consolidating overall at 7.5 million."

They added: "The low figure was during an advery break and isn't representative of the whole show."

That surely is the last remaining part of the original theme tune bed from 2004. It is good that this still remains. The other remaining part from 2004 was the theme played after Dermot had announced who was going home which had survived the past few jazzed up incarnations. But it looks like this part has now gone.
