And the thing is they were actually double boxing to please the sports viewer. If I was running the station at the time I would have put the program in the little box or preempt it totally and shift it to the .2. However CBS is picky when it comes to moving programming from the main channel even a marquee event such as The Masters, they’d probably be OK preempting it all together.

The station in question is not owned by CBS, so network programming (including sporting events) are at the mercy of local alerts.

True and CBS O&Os do break in. I was saying as a policy CBS does not allow you to change the channel (to a sub channel) of a program or reair it after late night or on Saturday. It affects every station including O&Os who say we are bound by our contract that we cannot shift programming.

During local preseason NFL or other acquired games the NBC affiliate can by their contract shift programming to a sub channel and usually replays the missed program during primetime on Saturdays (which is usually reruns). They do this for sports and breaking news.

As Hurricane Dorian approaches the Florida multiple tv stations up and down the coast will be covering the storm. The Weather Channel aside, these local stations will be in rolling coverage and always offer the best coverage than the national networks, that can only over "overview coverage" and nothing really specific.
Depending on the area of landfall will dictate which markets go into live rolling coverage.

Here is a selection of some stations, keep in mind this is not all the stations. And that many stations have become geoblocked over the last few years. (annoying). No sure if NEWSON is available on Roku outside North America. Try to search for it on private channels. They will have a specific channel dedicated to local rolling coverage.
Also livestream.com will have streams from local station. Usually the Fox Affiliates are available in each market on LIVESTREAM.COM

Historica Coverage from Oklahoma City as tornadoes struck the city and how stations KOCO, KFOR, KWTV all covered the damaging outbreak. One station even gets hit by a tornado live on air.

A F3 damaging tornado slammed into Dallas Sunday. Causing extensive damage. NBC affiliate KXAS was broadcasting a NFL game at that time. It can be tricky to break into sports broadcast because people typically complain. Well KXAS made a huge mistake. This tornado tore right thru a highly populated area. Most people watching tv were probably watching the game. This is potentially a dangerous combination. People were highly annoyed with KXAS for not doing their job. Heads will likely roll at a local level but especially up to the network level to the affiliate division. Someone messed up so bad the station had to issue an apology. Messy.

Quote:
“During Sunday night’s Dallas Cowboys game, we made a mistake by not immediately interrupting the football game with a Tornado Warning,” the station said in a statement.

“Although our meteorologists were tracking thunderstorms across the area when the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Dallas County, we delayed breaking into programming for six minutes. Our meteorologists were also streaming live weather coverage throughout the evening on our site, NBCDFW.com. We also alerted the football audience to our weather live stream throughout the game.

According to the station, the Tornado touched down right as the second half of the game was starting. KXAS waited six minutes to go into full-screen live coverage on the coverage.

“When it comes to dealing with severe weather, we know that seconds matter. We should have broken into football programming sooner. We apologize and want you to know that we’re doing everything in our power to make sure this does not happen again. We look forward to regaining your trust, and anyone who we may have disappointed,” the station said.

The F3 tornado touched down at 10:15p.m. local time on Sunday. The move to not cut into programming got a lot of people talking on social media before the station issued a statement.

It's a tricky decision when to cut in. However when theres a confirmed tornado or a tornado warning they should have cut in right away.

The game was also the Dallas Cowboys against the Philadelphia Eagles. They would have gotten a lot of flack from people for cutting into a local teams game. However at a minimum, they should have had a a crawl on screen the entire time and put live coverage on the CoZi subchannel - telling people to go to CoZi if they wanted weather coverage.

Even more so since the Tornado warning was for a built up part of the city and not thru the far flung nether regions of the MetroPlex. Bad decisions all around.
