So far, very little change to any NFL TV pres from NBC, Fox, or CBS. The only real thing to note is that NBC have replaced their cheesey opening number “Game On” sung by Carrie Underwood with their equally cheesey original opening song, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night”, which was previously used from 2006-2015.

Apparently though, ESPN Monday Night Football is getting a new look tonight, with a new neon yellow colour scheme. Sounds garish, and the colour is being called, er, “venom”.

Fox has very minor tweaks to the replay transition and other full screen graphics. As per usual, I would expect a revision from Fox at the Super Bowl to their graphics. Nothing new from CBS, but their look is just over a year old.

Sky stayed with SNF through the Post Game show, whereas in previous seasons they have gone off air at the end of the game. Additionally, Redzone continued until 1:20am for the conclusion of the Cardinals v Lions overtime.

Actually it looked like Fox has done a few changes, just not to the score graphics.

The old replay wipe looked like this

*

It now looks like this

*

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these graphics (used around some of the breaks) are new.

*

*

And the Gamebreak score updates started out looking like this

*

But as the games went on, turned over to this style.

*

With the background colour being the colour of the home team.

I hadn’t seen that, we don’t get the game-breaks on the feed supplied to Sky Sports (though you’ll sometimes see them on Redzone from NFL Network, which is the exact same as aired in the US). Sky have “Redzone Update” with Neil Reynolds which performs much the same function.

One stylistic change as well on Fox - at least during Dallas v NY Giants - they used the theme music into most breaks whereas they’ve preferred pop music more recently, and you’d only hear the full theme at the end of the first and third quarters and the two minute warning.

The changes to Sky taking the SNF wrap programming happened late last season - after the Comcast takeover went though.

One of the blocks to the start of the 2021-2024 UEFA CL / EL / EL2 rights round has been removed. The proposed format changes in the CL in 2024 have been delayed possibly scrapped. The uncertainty over this had been considered a possible block and leverage from the UEFA national associations stopping the triggering of the next global auction process. If so the UK rights could now be offered as soon as Q1 next year. UEFA will need a major rights award early, to gauge interest before the smaller rounds begin.

Any stats on how the scheduling changes affected ratings across Europe last year?

Changes already to the ESPN MNF package

https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/espn-switches-away-from-yellow-down-and-distance-graphic-after-just-one-half-of-monday-night-football.html

Quote:

ESPN debuted a new down-and-distance graphic on for their 2019 Monday Night Football opener between the Houston Texans and New Orleans Saints. The graphic was yellow, leaving viewers annoyed and confused.

That’s the same color viewers are used to seeing on football broadcasts when a flag has been thrown for a penalty.

And for penalties, the down-and-distance graphic turned black with “FLAG” (featuring a yellow outline and yellow letters) to only make things more confusing.

That is garish. Could have fooled me with the yellow though, looks more like green, in those stills anyway.

La Liga rights awarded to Premier Sports.

Shame nothing is staying on ITV4 after them coming in last season and for the first 3 weeks this season.

There was a lot of speculation about ITV4 in the last few days after reports confirming an FTA element of the new deal but it turns out that comes from Freesports.

Premier with a pretty decent portfolio of secondary-tier rights now.

It’s been interesting to see the change in Premier Sports over the last two years, from a proposition built almost entirely on rights aimed at ex-pats in the UK (GAA, NHL, and NRL) to one which is now a genuine third player in the pay sports market, with a decent portfolio of football rights, and the Pro14, and still with their traditional GAA and NHL, albeit having lost the NRL.

Meanwhile, their former partners in crime over at eir Sport have, after their unholy alliance with Virgin Media (their biggest competitor in the Broadband market) today pulled eir Sport 2 from Sky in Ireland and replaced it with Virgin Media Sport, who hold non-exclusive rights to a chunk of UEFA football. Virgin Media in turn are no longer reserving their Wednesday Champions League coverage to their sports channel and will be showing three Champions League and one Europa League game FTA next week.

Good to see Virgin Media making their Champions League and Europa League matches more widely available. I’m guessing the rights weren’t cheap and it makes sense to maximize eyeballs watching and also advertising revenue gained.
