C5 probably won't change much, but if they wanted to use the power of CBS to relaunch it I think closing it and replacing it with a CBS branded channel would be the way to go. Frankly there are probably only 4 brands on C5 worth keeping - Neighbours, Home and Away, Jeremy Vine and Milkshake. Beyond that it is a clean slate.

They wouldn't be able to just do what they like with Channel 5, as it has got various PSB obligations as part of its broadcasting licence, so any changes which would affect those obligations would have to be approved by Ofcom.

What actually caused them to split up in the first place (I've always assumed it was something to do with the Janet Jackson Superbowl incident, as CBS was in charge of the game and MTV were in charge of the halftime show)

Oh yeah, Nipplegate, some called it.

They had to censor a small part of the 2004 Olympic opening ceremony in Athens by digitally pixelating a female performer's breasts during a segment called Clepsydra , which showcased all the different periods of Greek history.

They did that because the Nipplegate incident was still fresh in people's minds at the time before the Games even started.

CBS didn’t carry Olympics then. I assume you mean nbc.

I wasn't referring to NBC, I was referring to the ceremony crew and the organisers of the Games...

ViacomCBS is such a clunky name, CBS-Viacom would have been or even phasing out the Viacom name in favour of CBS Paramount.

I envision Channel 5 and 10 working together on a drama or a factual series and maybe have a few Channel 5 owned shows like Cruising with Jane McDonald airing on the various 10 channels.

Interestingly, CBS used to own the later-defunct US network UPN, which stood for United Paramount Network which in turn used to be the original Paramount Network. It's come full circle, hasn't it?

I will now point you to ‘The CW’ Laughing

I wouldn't be surprised if ViacomCBS ends up selling their stake of The CW to WarnerMedia but as part of the deal they agree to produce or co-produce a number of shows.

There was a lot of rivalry between CBS and MTV Networks, particularly between the heads of each division (Les Moonves & Tom Freston).

Here is a interesting little documentary about CBS/UPN/WB/PARAMOUNT/CW and rise and fall of all it . Its complicated and odd. But finally they are all reformed to become one company again.

Star Trek's TV and Movie owners have merged again, and both can share with each other again without licensing or special arrangements.

Quote:
New York (CNN Business)CBS (CBS) and Viacom (VIA) are merging to become ViacomCBS Inc., they announced Tuesday.
The long-awaited deal between the two media giants puts some of the biggest brands in entertainment back under one corporate banner.
Those brands include CBS' broadcast network, the streaming service CBS All Access, movie studio Paramount and cable networks like Showtime, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET and Comedy Central.
Bob Bakish, the current CEO of Viacom, will become CEO of the new company.

"Today marks an important day for CBS and Viacom, as we unite our complementary assets and capabilities and become one of only a few companies with the breadth and depth of content and reach to shape the future of our industry," Bakish said in a statement on Tuesday.
The merger is a reunion for CBS and Viacom. The two companies used to be one, but split in 2006. Shari Redstone, the president of CBS's parent company National Amusements, has been trying for years to reunite the two. Her efforts were initially stymied by former CBS chief Les Moonves, who left his role last September amid a flurry of sexual misconduct allegations against him.
The deal comes during a volatile period in the media industry. Multiple other companies have done similar deals in an attempt to gain scale and combat challenges from digital-native rivals. Dinsey bought much of what was once 21st Century Fox, for instance, and AT&T purchased Time Warner — now WarnerMedia — including CNN. Disney (DIS), WarnerMedia and other legacy media companies are also debuting new streaming services in the coming months in part to compete with Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon (AMZN).
The merger of CBS and Viacom will "create the second largest player in US TV advertising" and the improved scale of the companies could create a stronger negotiating position with third parties, according to research firm Moffett Nathanson.

"CBS's and Paramount's production asset will quickly move up the ranks to challenge the big boys of Disney, Comcast, AT&T and Netflix and will be an attractive home for creative talent," Moffett Nathanson analysts said in a note to clients on Friday.
The announcement comes after weeks of media reports and rumors regarding negotiations between CBS and Viacom. The companies' stocks both jumped when the merger talks were reported in late May.

If the ViacomCBS name does happen to be official, I take it that the Paramount logo will have its byline updated from A Viacom Company to A ViacomCBS Company .

Like how Warner Bros had its logo's byline updated from A TimeWarner Company to A WarnerMedia Company

Or they'll ditch bylines altogether (see: 20th Century Fox, after the Old News Corporation split into 21st Century Fox and New News Corp - no "A 21st Century Fox Company" nor "Part of The Walt Disney Company" bylines).

So long as the channel owners provide programmes that meet the obligations and quotas set in the C5 license commitments then they can call the channel what they like and broadcast programmes as they see fit.

C5's were always very light in terms of PSB requirement when compared to other commercial PSBs.
