Yes, Film Four was used for the racing clashes (usually on Saturday afternoons) and was shown 'in the clear' at those times.
Of course, what we saw today demonstrated what would have been, should C4 have carried on showing the cricket once More4 had launched - a Freeview channel that had pretty much the same reach as C4 taking over, which would have been a vast improvement and disproved the naysayers.
I deliberately didn't mention the racing clashes in that article as it genuinely wasn't a problem for me - cutting off play, though, was really not good and thankfully stopped after 2003.
Ste - it was a 10.45am start for play in 2003, then 10.30am in 2004 and 2005. They did show winter tour highlights when they began - tours to South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India were all shown (in the years between 1999 and 2002), but the New Zealand tour of 2002 was not shown and the 2002-3 Ashes was only shown under duress. No highlights of the 2003 World Cup and then no further away highlights after that (although ICC Cricket World was shown in two year-long series - February 2002-February 2003 and then February 2004-February 2005).
