I think it depends on the source - watching the Masters golf there's very definitely crowd noise and applause *only* coming from the rear surround speakers but the football is less obvious. TVPlayer Channel 5 for the rugby is (surprisingly) definitely 5.1, as is iPlayer.

EDIT : The rugby is 2.0 upconverted to 5.1 by my amp - I can hear remnants of commentary in the rear speakers where it hasn't quite been muted but the crowd noise is loud enough so the effect isn't noticable.

Informed Speculation (which has some sense about it)

HD to be introduced mid July (week beginning 8th July 2019?) on NOW TV devices, all others and BT switch on, up and running by 31 July 2019 ready for HD First Test, Ashes Cricket coverage on 1st August 2019 on all services along with terms changes.

BTTV reconfiguration in week commencing 22nd July 2019.

This may explain the trial invite I received earlier this week.

Does anyone have a list of what is actually in 4K on NowTV I unsubscribed since I wasn't watching it but fancy subbing for Chernobyl.

Nothing, the 4K is for Netflix through their 4K smart box. Currently programming on Now TV is 720p or SD for some live channels, although there is supposed to be a 1080p option in the future.
