I quite liked that 2004-06 look in all honesty -particularly the closing theme to the bulletins shown below:

Certainly preferred it to the 'virtual newsroom' era 2006-08 which I never liked and looked very obviously make. Doesn't help that the 2006-08 era was when ITV was very sensationalist in tone ('Bye Bye Beckham'/'Timetable to Terror').

But then my views are quite different to some on the ITV News presentation. After they got rid of the iconic mid 90s themes, my favourite versions of the ITV News theme is probably the version they used until 2004 which I always found very authoritative and I did like the Andrew Burt voiceover:

And I quite liked the 'batcave' era of ITV News especially the 'images of the day' in the title sequence and the news theme they used around then - especially the extended closing music they used for News at 10 back then.

I've a sucker for a good dramatic news theme.

The seamless transition from the titles to the studio is a really nice detail I hadn’t noticed before. The opening shot overlooking the studio is quite effective too.

The "virtual newsroom" was not a virtual newsroom in 2006-2008, it was a live action view of the ITN Newsroom with the real atrium view from Grays Inn Road.

The 2009-2013 look was nicknamed the "trying to find your way out of an underground car park" titles.

I liked the 1999 titles. Didn't like the yellow and blue update in 2002/2003(?) though when they got rid of the fixed headlines.

I think the point was that although the images were a real view (unlike the current backdrop), it wasn't actually there behind the studio, i.e. it was screens rather than windows.

That is right, it was all pure green screen. ITV News brought in the look in January 2006 because viewers complained the 2004-2006 look was very cold and empty. Having a view of the atrium and the newsrooms made the studio feel a bit less empty and provide a "live action" feel to their news. It looked very nice to me in my opinion.

In the 2005 general election, ITV experimented with the atrium look so they must have been happy to use a similar look for their 2006 revamp.

How nice it would be to return to 5 seconds per headline, 4 headlines and the bulletin into its stride within a minute.
Be nicer and more tolerant to each other. Them's the rules.

P.S. Here is the 2004 relaunch thread. I guess we're the Samuel Pepys of TV presentation.

It's bizarre that when the "ITV News (insert region name here)" branding was first rolled out, superfluous suffix words such as "Tonight" or "at Six" sensibly weren't retained in most regions (otherwise we'd have e.g. "ITV News Meridian Tonight" etc), and yet Granada got to retain its "Reports" (which had never hitherto been used on short bulletins anyway). It will never cease to bother me.

Granada Reports hasn't even been around for that long either. It's only been running since 2001, before which it was called Granada Tonight, and yet there were other news programmes like Meridian Tonight which had been around for longer than Granada Reports (although the Meridian Tonight name did continue on Facebook until last year).

There is now also "ITV News Wales at Six" and "ITV News Channel TV"

I can understand why they didn't want the latter called "ITV News Channel", but can't understand why they didn't keep it as "ITV News Channel Report"
