Guess they'll be gone by the end of the season and La Liga back with one of the big boys.
I figure the going on with La Liga is to keep the league on side when they have a continuing relationship with them in other territories. The deal apparently now ends at the end of this season- it should have lasted three seasons.
The Premier Sports angle is interesting. On the one hand, this fits with their strategy of picking up rights going on the cheap. On the other hand, after a long time targeting primarily ex-pats (with GAA, NHL, and, until 2016, NRL) they’ve now acquired a package of rights, with the Pro14 and a number of continental football leagues, that’s of wider interest. The NRL gap has been quite substantially filled with arguably far more valuable rights. They’ve the 3pm KOs on the way (back) in Ireland next season too, though it’ll be interesting to see how their relationship with eir Sport (who have been completely quiet about this announcement, though their customers will be benefitting) going forward and particular when eir part ways with BT Sport at the end of July. The reincarnated Setanta looks in a stronger position in the UK market at any rate, even if they’re still a niche player.
