More bad news for motorsport fans in the UK. There will be no FTA coverage available for the WRC on Channel 5 anymore. The extension to their FTA deal with the WRC has not materialized. It will only be available on BT Sport, WRC+, Red Bull TV & Youtube.

When did WRC highlights on S4C end?

I only noticed S4C have their own programme. When is Ralio shown on S4C?

Serie A is to move to Premier Sports exclusively from 1st March as Eleven Sports ends its deal with rights holder IMG. The Chinese and Dutch leagues will also do the same leaving Eleven Sports to concentrate on La Liga.

Both Eleven and Premier Sports will show Serie A until March when it will just be exclusively on Premier Sports.

Guess they'll be gone by the end of the season and La Liga back with one of the big boys.

Let's hope so - looks like a stich-up with some of the rights going (or handed) to Premier Sports. Didn't look like there was a three way bidding war with Sky, BT and Premier Sports over them.

Talking of Premier Sports. Did I read somewhere that they were going to upgrade FreeSports on Sky to HD, or did I dream it?

If Eleven were trying to get as much of the fee back as possible then presumably they’d have at least made enquiries with Sky and BT? Perhaps both said no - quite possible given both of them have dropped certain ‘secondary’ rights. Maybe Premeir were the ones were the only ones willing to pay the price- plus it’s more appealing for them than it would be for Sky or BT.

There was an announcement and there were even some tests. Then the tests disappeared and it all went quiet. The best guess I’ve seen is that there wasn’t space for an HD channel on one of the transponders with the tighter U.K. footprint (with much less overspill than other transponders) or the price for the space was too high.

I figure the going on with La Liga is to keep the league on side when they have a continuing relationship with them in other territories. The deal apparently now ends at the end of this season- it should have lasted three seasons.

The Premier Sports angle is interesting. On the one hand, this fits with their strategy of picking up rights going on the cheap. On the other hand, after a long time targeting primarily ex-pats (with GAA, NHL, and, until 2016, NRL) they’ve now acquired a package of rights, with the Pro14 and a number of continental football leagues, that’s of wider interest. The NRL gap has been quite substantially filled with arguably far more valuable rights. They’ve the 3pm KOs on the way (back) in Ireland next season too, though it’ll be interesting to see how their relationship with eir Sport (who have been completely quiet about this announcement, though their customers will be benefitting) going forward and particular when eir part ways with BT Sport at the end of July. The reincarnated Setanta looks in a stronger position in the UK market at any rate, even if they’re still a niche player.

That happened right when they announced they had secured the Pro14 rights - my assumption has always been that getting Premier Sports 2 on air in a rush was the priority over a HD FreeSports. That said, they’ve managed to find space to put a second encrypted copy of FreeSports for ROI viewers on air since (so that they can block certain programmes that eir Sport are also showing).

Just two again then on the BBC, though real value in the first pick this time as isn't much to feast on beyond that.
