I know they had some of it, I don't think they ever had all of it though. I think they bought about 70-odd of the episodes from it.

Did Challenge ever have the last series that was originally broadcast on ITV? I've never seen them show the last episode where Bob confirms that it's the end of Blockbusters.

About 100 episodes I think which just went out in a loop - presumably it was one of those situations where an episode starts with three new contestants and the batch handily happens to finish after a third gold run where all new contestants are needed on the next show.

200 odd episodes of that series were made (as by that point the show was effectively on all year round) so quite why they never bought them will remain a mystery. Maybe one day.

Here's what it looked like the first episode:

Interesting to note that Challenge tagged on a different outro to that edition - the one which was usually at the end of the Friday show; the original broadcast had the shorter outro.

You sure it wasn't done by Channel 4 when the series was repeated in summer of 1984?

Bit frustrating that some episodes from the first series have gone missing though, was annoying when Challenge showed it and the episode after a missing one began by Bob telling us what the answer to the question asked at the end of the previous edition was- but we have no idea what the question was! I think there were about 4 or 5 that had gone walkies?

My Question still stands, how do we know the edit wasn't done for channel 4 when it was repeated in 1984.

Oh pardon me for not answering your question. We don't know whether the edit was made for the 1984 repeat on Channel 4 or whether Challenge did it themselves. I guess we'll never know.

Then what was the point of that post? I made a simple point and all you did was reply with a video with no explanation.

Sorry, I wish I hadn't bothered now.

There are some Challenge episodes of Blockbusters on YouTube that have the original shorter ending on from the first series so if Challenge have changed the ending, they didn't do it on all the episodes. We know from previous form that Challenge only change the credits if they really have to, such as the first series of Tarrant Millionaire (which was effectively unusable due to a split screen and references to a websites, phone number and teletext) and if they do it once they'll usually do it for all of them. Its in a modern broadcaster's interest to shorten the credits, not triple their length so in its original form it would have been better for Challenge anyway.

Where the change was made to that episodes of Blockbusters I linked to is anybody's guess. Poking around on YouTube it looks like the shorter ending was used right up until the titles were changed for the better known version in 1986/87. There are two possible answers: Challenge had to chop something out thanks to 'events' and by recreating a longer credit run it kept the original running time, or it was changed by ITV for whatever reason before Challenge received it (this assumes of course Challenge received new copies if they didn't have the files already. If they already had them then that blows that theory out).

Short titles were kept until at least 1990 or 1991 series. There was a video with a contestant who had two episodes and you can clearly see the short credits in use end date of "C"
