It's on on Thursdays again for the next 2 weeks at least, the schedules haven't been released any further ahead yet.

And will have to be on every non-Sky at night Thursday from now on for them to finish 1986 by Christmas provided no other non-Smith episodes end up being unbroadcastble.

Hopefully there'll be a lot fewer weeks next year where it's only reduced to one day, or not at all, as Mike Smith leaves after March 1988. As long as there's no issues with any other presenters. As there was quite an influx in 1988- Nicky Cambpell, Mark Goodier, Andy Crane, Anthea Turner, Liz Kershaw, Susie Mathis, Sybil Ruscoe and Caron Keating all appeared for the first (in Liz Kershaw's case, only) time that year.

BBC4 seem to have chosen to stop showing TOTP in its traditional Thursday evening slot for some reason. It isn't on tonight but is on tomorrow, Friday, instead. But there is no reason why it shouldn't have been on tonight. There is just another regular half hour programme instead, not even Sky At Night which has long been the case once per month on Thursday in place of TOTP. What they have scheduled tonight could have been placed on Friday instead, thus keeping TOTP at the expected day.

More likely it's so they can show the whole four-part series of National Treasures of Wales in one week, on consecutive evenings, rather than the final part inelegantly shoved into next week. And Friday is "the expected day" too!

There were rumours going around that BBC4 wouldn't be able to show the 5th June episode, but they seemed to be based purely on the fact that the Pet Shop Boys performance from that episode is the only one of theirs from the 80s they didn't put on DVD, so someone had decided the tape must be damaged or wiped and in true internet form, this became "fact". That they showed a clip from that performance on the Story of 1986 clearly passed them by, and it is scheduled for the 5th October. It's amazing how quickly someone's opinion on a forum or social media seems to quickly become "fact" these days.

Probably because most people on social media don't bother to check the facts themselves before hitting Share. after all if its in BIG CAPITAL 48pt LETTERS and has a order to "share if you think this is a disgrace" on the bottom it has to be true... right?

No, that single charts at the end of June in a few weeks. He's currently in the chart at the end of April 1986 with This Is Love.

Which brings me nicely to......

GARY NEWMAN , DUANE EDDIE and ATLANTIC STAR Embarassed

Quality control on TOTP seems to have been lacking over the years. A great example this week. THREE spelling mistakes in the chart countdown - Atlantic Star, continued to be misspelt when it should have been 'Starr'. But the far more unforgivable spelling mistake was with Gary Numan, an artist who has been charting regularly for 7 years and yet some clueless idiot wrote his name as Gary 'Newman', when he's far from the new man on the block by this period. Then the clueless idiot wrote Duane Eddy spelt as 'Eddie' - he'd only been charting for nearly 30 years by this point! It's one thing making these mistakes, yet nobody else in production noticed them before broadcast either. So very poor.

The number of misspellings (and incorrect chart positions on captions) in the few years leading up to this point has been remarkable.

The most amazing one was in 1984 when Chaka Khan was spelled Chaka Kahn for 9 weeks running , on both the chart rundown and the caption for her studio performances!

I find it incredible that it went uncorrected for that length of time - how did nobody at the BBC or her record company notice it?

1990/1991 also saw a massive number of mis-spelt, and error-riddled captions. Up until Year Zero anyway, from which point there were scarcely any...

Back then they were probably more bothered about the fancy animations than getting the captions spelt right Razz
