Really looking forward to seeing this new look, just hope they don't distance themselves too much from the corporate look. I think South Today has a good mix of the best elements of the corporate look, like the titles and music yet has their own set, a regional variation of the National set. Still, if the midlands must be individual, hopefully they'll make a good job of it, which I'm sure they will.

Incidentally, if they're about to move to the Mailbox, why build a new set at the Pebble Mill building, why not wait or will this one be merely transported and not built from scratch again when they move?

well the fact the trailer, comprising of "do you remember this? ... you MUST remember this" over past sets of titles kind of points (for me anyway) towards new titles. i know the trailer was also used for the previous relaunch which didn't involve new titles - but as we all know new titles were made but rejected.

i, personally, hope they break away from the corporate look as much as poss. midlands today is not a straight news programme, and thus sharing design elements with the previous national look and current po-faced regions is ridiculous. the conservatory proves how simple it is to create a look which isn't at all at odds with the look of the national news and reflects the programme content.

as to the move to the mailbox - we're looking at march now arent we? i think chas and the team realise dan at central will no doubt be relaunching/refreshing central (a, cos its been a while and b, cos it looks awful) - so it was a good idea to get in first. it would have been a long time to plod on with the backbone of the current set which has been in place since 2000.

anyway - kay was on this morning, she looked VERY at home. kay knew that thousands of you non-midlanders were joining her for the first time so welcomed you all in her 8.30 update. how very lovely of her, in a world where so many people have lost their manners kay is a shining light. for anyone that missed it:

Arrow kay's welcome to all viewers on sattellite

i had to laugh at the kay's lunch today - "this is bbc one in the midlands" anno played instead of her headline bed at 1.00 and then at the end of the 1.30 kay was shouting as the guys in the gallery were so loud in her ear. she told us to watch tonight at 6.30 "its all about over indulgent lifestyles - but it IS with nick and suzanne". followed by no music and an audible countdown "run the trail", "music ben, ANYTHING" - then the relaunch trailer.

KAY IN A BAMBOO CHAIR

Yes, such dreams are becoming reality. This latest info has just come in about the Midlands Today relaunch:

We're told to look out for a softer, more comfortable look and a window on the world backdrop that is 'startlingly different as well as appreciably better.'

I like the sound of SOFTER and MORE COMFORTABLE look - this MUST mean Kay in a bamboo chair. I can feel it. Looks like there will be no clues until Monday when it is unveiled. CAN'T WAIT!!

Has the conservatory got a glass roof ? What would happen if it started lashing down with rain, could noise be a problem ?

It certainly is at BBC LDN. There was a torrential downpour recently that made it sound like an aircraft was taking off... They had to apologise on-air at least once!

Pay attention, young man. I said that about four pages ago ...

Some exciting pictures in this thread, but first things first.

Mark Gough was in the 'virtual' studio explaing about Fluoride:

Apparently the Midlands have the best teeth in the country, because of the Fluoride, and I notice that NUNEATON is one of these areas...good good:

BUT a *FAB* preview of the new look Midlands Today on Monday. Sadly not uncorporate, in fact - not joining a style of South Today/National news at all...but there is some very fab things about:

JUST what we always wanted - Midlands Today on a sofa. Which does mean we will get Midlands Breakfast with Kay on a sofa!! Also the brackets on the set walls seems to indicate that the plasmas will be fixed to the set. How will they cope without being able to move the plasmas and the panels now!!? As I said, not as uncorporate as hoped, but still a move in the right direction for me.

oooh well i say!

i'd have ideally liked something a little more un-corporate - but you have to admit it does look good!

the show has always been a pebble mill at one/good morning with anne and nick hybrid - and this just reflects that. looks very clean and simple.

it'll be interesting to see whether they keep the shot of brum on the back "window" or show something else - and of course what ever they are doing with the plasmas - maybe using them instead of window captions? (although they must have NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS written on)

where will shef stand? will steve sit on the sofa seeing as he is about 8ft tall? how will they hand over to OBs if the plasma is behind them? new titles? what will be on the front of the desk?

so many questions.

first impressions - 100x better than the last one.

edit: and isn't it remarkably similar to the central news october 2001 set - sofa in the far end of the studio - curving wall closer to the camera, sofa etc etc. mind you, who can blame them, what central had was a winning formula!

Can I see a normal desk on that set as well as the sofa? I do hope so, as I really don't like news programes presented from a sofa. If they move half way through the program then that is fine.

Is there NO Desk???

There seems to be a coffee table, and I can see what looks like the desk from the previous set on the left of the screen.

i just presumed that it was standing there because they hadn't had chance to dismantle it, iirc the desk is wider than the door, plus theres the awkward little porch to get through. alternatively they might just shove it behind the set along with the other bits ad bobs like the view point midlands chairs Confused

cant see them swapping the desk for sofas half way through (a'la breakfast) seeing as they'd have to shift everything during a report - remembering that the desk has a computer inside and down-lighting

I meant really having two sections of the set, one with a proper desk, where they would do the main, serious stories, and then half way through the programe, they would move over to the soft part of the set, and do the more light hearted stories.

you must remember, as fab as Pebble Mill is, it doesn't offer a lot of space - I doubt you could fit the two areas in that studio.

The move to the mailbox may herald this though!
