Hello, new to the forum! I have a mixed opinion on this new schedule. A few remarks:
- I'm glad that they are revamping business programming as the 'CNN Money' brand seemed relatively superfluous - surely every news story could have a money angle(?), the consolidation of financial and tech resources into 'CNN Business' makes sense. However, how can you call an international business programme which airs after the close of Asia-Pacific markets and in the final hours of European trading (when the majority of European professionals are at work), 'First Move'? It seems to totally ignore the whole world outside of the NY area. If it's a programme for traders, CNBC starts US programming at 5a and Bloomberg now has Surveillance from 4a ET? We cannot entirely judge the format or presentation yet, but I doubt it will be anything captivating - since Chatterley has left Bloomberg, her slot seems to be covered by Lisa Abramowicz and Julie Hyman there who are just as good, if not better, cannot fault them - so I struggle to see the hype CNN is making out. Maggie Lake was formidable, and actually dealt very well with international stores which broke during her show. We'll have to wait and see I suppose...
- Moving some of the programming earlier is an odd move, meaning CNN Today is now at 5am HKT, which is bizarre for an Asia-Pacific morning show and unless there are format changes it doesn't work as a late European hour of world news. Then again cutting Hong Kong almost entirely and having 15 minute World Sports after 'hard news' hours like IDesk is really bizarre so I'm not entirely surprised.
- Newsroom LA was awful for the reasons given by fellow posters, so its cancellation is good news. Sesay is right that there is overwhelming Trump coverage by CNN right now, but this seems like it will not change so it will seep into CNN International I'm afraid. However, I have to say that when I'm in the UK Brexit coverage is daily, yet it hasn't really seeped into BBC World News or London editions of other international channels - so I would question why CNNI has so much simulcasting and 'State of America'. I understand expats and US travellers are a key demographic but surely they don't tune in to CNNI for endless debates and speculation over Trump gaffes - they probably get enough of that when back in the US or on social media. My work offices across Europe used to have CNNI on but now they have Euronews in their place - it might be financially driven but I remember seeing a panel of heads rampaging over Sarah Sanders EVERY DAY FOR A WEEK during the New Day simulcast.
- I would hope that there are more CNN Newsroom editions dotted throughout the day. They seem to be the only programmes of 30 mins straight-up news delivered by the core team of news presenters. Especially at weekends, we now get Ana Cabrera. I remember her simulcast came up straight after the royal wedding coverage and she couldn't understand her guest's English regional accent - her other guest actually relayed the discussion for her and at the end she said "thanks for translating it all for us". It really is deplorable, I do not watch CNNI on weekends. And to think that slot is followed by the versatile Zain Asher doing 3- 5 hours of headlines and no actual bulletins.
