Slightly odd closing with Tom just now.

"I'm afraid that I will be back here tomorrow night" before swiftly dropping his scripts beneath the desk presumably in the bin and not looking too pleased.

Tough night behind the scenes I presume?

Well, if he doesn't want to be there I am sure our old favourite,Wesley Smith, will be happy to cover. Wink

Or just a little self deprecation taken too seriously by some viewers.

I thought it was his attempt from when to emulate Paxman when he said "Martha's paying for a sin in a past life", or something similar in a Newsnight sign off!

NAT Editorial meeting, 20.00hrs.

Editor "We need another angle on this bridge thing in Italy"

(silence from production team)

Senior producer "What about killer concrete kills people on killer bridge - could it happen here?"

Editor "Naa. Bit tabloidy for us"

Senior Producer "But GMB will probably do it tomorrow morning"

Editor "Yeah. Good point, get someone on it. It leads and I want a 2 minute package. Needs to be full of scientific words, though. Is Lawrence McGinty in the newsroom?"

Goodness that really was bad - unbelievably crass. How on earth did that get approved for air?

That's the problem with the 'matey'/chatty delivery on News At 10 - when it goes wrong, it can go badly wrong.

I was appalled when I heard it last night; you don;t make a joke out of two very serious events.

That is genuinely bad. It's way too OTT, even for ITV. That was something I'd expect to come from 7 News in Australia, or Fox News in the US, not ITV's flagship news programme.
