well sharuna presented midlands breakfast from the conservatory this morning, it all looked very nice - so bright - if only they could continue using the studio for breakfast/lunch!
anyway, it goes without saying sharuna made some mistakes (but we love her for it)

notice the strange bbc local radio station on the midlands breakfast system - BBC WMtoke ... sharuna hasn't been copy and pasting things ... surely not

http://www.tvmercia.co.uk/upload/bbcmids-conservatory-breakfast04.jpg
she struggled over the web address at the end too - bbc dot ... bbc dot co dot uk forward slash midlands today
oh and *excitement alert* - they went LIVE to mark foster at the bullring in the longer updates too - very fab! - oh and she finished too early at 7.55 - so they cut to a still "midlands today" caption.
bless them

Well I'm sure it's no big secret that I'm usually really anti-Midlands Today and anti-Look North etc etc, but I'm actually rather impressed by Midlands Today. Whoever came up with the conservatory shift should be given a lagre raise. And it looks great - I don't know what this new thing's gonna look like, but the conservatory seems right for morning and afternoon bulletins.
:-(
Hmmm if you say so, never heard that expression myself.
Anyway what's the point of spending loads of money renovating a building that the BBC don't want? The move has been on the cards for a very long time - even if it was refitted everyone would have to move out during the refit.
It's an ugly 1960s office block, and like so many BBC buildings totally inappropriate for modern broadcasting.
Excpet for the staff who work there (and other BBC staff that need to visit)..... who mostly agree that it is a ****-hole

seeing as its had no money spent on it for 10 years, what do you expect?! and the slap in the face for london refers to the midlands today cliché "another slap in the face for the midlands" - but altered.

Is that what Bob on Central said ahead of the Central News 2001 look? Or did you just make it up?
MT are still gonna keep the same titles though surely or slightly change them, or else they wouldn't fit in with the other regions.

Suzanne presented MT this lunchtime:

Doesn't the conservatory look fabulous when the sunlight is pouring in:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap289.jpg
Shefali was live at Kay's new Bull Ring:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap295.jpg
And a little later on, back to Kay's Bull Ring and Shefali seems to have found someone:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap307.jpg
Yes! It's David Mullet....I mean Gregory.
Standing in a totally non-camp pose...HONEST!!:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap311.jpg
The excuse for David being there was that he would be telling us about when you enter Kay's Bull Ring, you are being tracked. But the conversation between included Shefali saying "good friend and science correspondent..." and David saying "Thanks for that, babe"
But anyway, COR, look at that mullet:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap312.jpg
Finally, seems to be a little mix-up with what to put in the plasma and it reads "LIVE Bull Ring" - oh well...it couldn't all go perfect!!:

Fabulous programmes from both sides tonight. Central did their programme live from the Bullring:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap365.jpg
Meanwhile Phillipa Thompson had the rest of the days news back in the studio:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap334.jpg
And Bob Hall later had the sport:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap379.jpg
Bob and Jo looked as though they really enjoyed themselves - and I think it was the best Central News in a while as both Bob and Jo looked relaxed, and the banter was all very natural:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap375.jpg
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap398.jpg
Central News also ended the programme with a very long version of the closing theme, along with a few soundbytes of people saying how much they loved the Bullring. It was very nice to hear the theme, and a great way to close the programme.
Then on Midlands Today at 6.30 - Suzanne was live at the Bullring:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap407.jpg
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap410.jpg
Also David Gregory brought us his report - but resisted joining Shefali later in the programme:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap417.jpg
Also *TOP CELEBRITY* Janice Long pleaded with viewers to vote for Ozzy Ozbourne as the Greatest Midlands from a lovely Pebble Mill network radio studio:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap420.jpg
Nick was back in the studio with the other news and tried to hold the programme together:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jamesison/caps-2/caps004/cap427.jpg
There were many time when we went to Suzanne live and she'd be half way through an intro to a report on the Bullring, then she'd stop. Look nervous for about 5 seconds and start all over again. Also at one point she introduced a whole report on the Selfridges building, only for us to cut back to Nick and him saying "Actually, we'll hear about that a little later on. First sport..." and then she had to redo the whole intro sequence to the report about 10 minutes later. Seems someone wasn't making Suzanne aware of her cues or the running order for that matter!!
Although if they were daring to run an autocue out there - it might not have been Suzanne's fault and more a lack of communication between the studio and the team at the Bullring (more likely!) - but the timing was still very iffy. But we wouldn't have it any other way.

What I want to know is will Midlands Today still be generic or are they breaking away from the generic look and going back to there own style.
(I do hope so!)
(I do hope so!)
BE
It's possible, especially since they're talking about a new "logo". None of the current regional news programmes have a logo as such (just the name written in gill sans), so it sounds like it may be breaking from the corporate look. Probably the most likely scenario is that they'll keep elements of the corporate look - ie. it will still be recognisable that it's a BBC News programme, but they'll inject some Midlands Today "individuality" into it.

If they do break away from the corporate look this could signal a major step change in BBC regional news presentation. I imagine other regions would soon follow suit.

Well if I recall correctly, the "rules" governing the presentation of BBC regional programmes were relaxed, and regions now have far more say on what they look like within a certain framework. So it's entirely possible that Midlands Today are coming up with an individual look within the general frame of BBC News.
