Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let's not mention *him* now.
Also, the Central name *does* live on to some extent, nearly a quarter of a century after the station was taken over by one of the two companies that merged into ITV plc.
Again, though, it won't be around forever.

I disagree with that last bit. Those legacy regional names that are actual words (such as "Central" ) I can well believe will always survive as suffixes to the "ITV" name, for as long as the regional news programmes exist.
It's only those that are/were initials that don't lend themselves to that (the likes of "ITV HTV" or "ITV UTV" would look/sound bloody ridiculous). Hence, the suffix would surely have to be the purely geographic "...Northern Ireland" if/when any full "ITV"-rebrand reaches Belfast. I don't think there's any point in bothering changing to e.g. "ITV News East Midlands" etc elsewhere.

Though of course 'Central' is already a geographic name

Back in the days when SMG took over Grampian, Grampian retained its name but took Scottish TV's presentation package. It was only when a subsequent rebranding took place that the Grampian name was lost.
I can see something similar happening here. It doesn't take too much extra effort to keep a separate UTV ident, it lets people who are on staff run out the clock until it's time to retire and it avoids any immediate political backlash. Meanwhile, to all intents and purposes elsewhere UTV Is ITV - same website, same news set, virtually the same schedule, same promos with UTV shoved on at the end.
Then, when the time comes for the switch, it won't be so much of a shock for people.

To be fair grampian was rebranded twice under Scottish. 2000 and 2003. Even then in 1998 it was given new ident. 9 years to lose its name, but it still had locally made shows until 2006 aswell.

As are most of the other ITV regions.
The only real exception is Granada, but given the 60+ year association with the region, I can't see them changing it any time soon.

ITV is in the business of Making Money, At some point in the future they may or may not change the name of UTV to ITV, but they're not doing so now and possibly won't do so for years to come. UTV is accepted as the name of the station by everyone in the Area. Why create a problem where there is none? I would assume they already discussed this in detail. If they were going to change it today would have been the right day to do it.
It's a little bizarre that you have some on here that are certain ITV will change it as soon as possible to create a uniform look. So certain they are that they keep predicting it will happen every few months. It doesn't happen and then they predict in a few months more. It's like American television evangelists predicting the end of the world, it's always around the corner. Obviously, they'll get it correct someday but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Why create a problem where there is none?
Why describe that act of changing a single vowel within a 3-letter abbreviation as "creating a problem"?

The ITV of today is very different to that of 15 odd years ago.
If UTV had become part of ITV plc back in 2004, chances are it would have been rebranded as ITV at the time, in the same way that HTV was rebranded.
Similarly, if HTV had remained independent, and only become part of ITV plc more recently, the HTV name might still be around today (in Wales at least).

You obviously don't have the Norn Iron mindset... Both sides can create problems from nothing.
