Trouble brewing in Switzerland - a referendum next month will decide whether the SBC loses all of its public funding and becomes totally commercialized.

A poll found the Leave side has 40% support in the all-or-nothing vote, which isn't supported by the government and was instigated by far-right MPs. (Sound familiar?) The silly part is that, in a very rich country, the SBC gets one of the world's highest licence fees. A sudden change would decimate it.... but still, it could never be worse than TVNZ, ba-dum-ch

With four official languages, Swiss broadcasting is probably unique in the world:

SBC has survived!

And this website fully summed up the national broadcaster's importance in the everyday culture and identity of the Swiss people:

"In Switzerland over 70% of the public have voted against an initiative to scrap the television licence fee, meaning Switzerland will still compete in Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal."

Oh yeah, Eurovision, that's the main thing Wink

(The report calls the SBC by its 4-lingual official name, SRG SSR)

I know BBC One is "international" to some of us, but there's already a thread.

How does the licence fee tie in to Eurovision eligibility?

Also, yay! I'm sick of greedy capitalists who know the price of everything and the value of nothing trying to destroy public broadcasting.

It doesn't. ITV are members of Eurovision.
It's down to the simple rule of if you pay 'the subs' you can become a member.

However, given that the biggest broadcaster members of Eurovision are in part or wholly funded by some form of license fee/broadcasting tax in their countries, you could be excused for thinking that is how to be a member of the EBU.

There are some more requirements - you have to run a news service as well as paying a membership fee (and (*) being within the European Broadcasting Area - and usually a member of the Council of Europe)

This was why there were question marks over Israel being able to enter, as IBA (the previous ESC Israel public service broadcaster) closed and the replacement service initially planned to be news-free (and thus not eligible). However the new Israeli broadcaster DOES now have a news service, and so can enter...

(*) We gloss over Australia. (There's a get-out clause that says the Reference Group who run the ESC can make exceptions / special invitations)

As a part of the reform initiated by the new eternal emperor of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping (just kidding), three state broadcasters CCTV (television, along with its non-Chinese language services CGTN), CNR (domestic radio) and CRI (international radio) will come under one roof. The name of the new body can be translated as "Central Radio and Television Broadcasting", but each output will keep their name.

Arrow CGTN (part of CCTV)
Arrow People's Daily (ruling Communist Party's newspaper)
Arrow South China Morning Post (a commercial English-language newspaper in Hong Kong which is now a part of Alibaba Group in China)

Will there be a joint news operation, common branding or something?

Speaking of that, when will France TV and Radio France merge?

Some significant news for Danish public service broadcasting. The Danish government is today announcing its proposal for changes in media funding. It's previously been announced that the government has secured support to scrap the licence fee, and fund the national broadcaster - DR - and other licence-fee-funded services from general tax spending. Moreover, DR will be subject to a 20% cut in its budget over five years.

Leaks to the media have revealed more details, including that DR will be required to close two of its six TV channels. The government will also seek to sell off 40% of the publicly-owned (but commercially structured) broadcaster TV2. The government also wants to vastly expand a public service fund that will be used to commission content from a range of different producers (ie. non-government). The fund will reportedly be expanded to 220 million kroner (around £26m, if I have the calculation right).

It is not clear the (minority) government will secure parliamentary support for all the proposed measures. My attempt at reading the tea leaves: negotiations between parties could well yield a retreat from some of the budget cuts in exchange for more of DR and TV2 being moved out of Copenhagen.

It appears the international Dutch language channel BVN has had a makeover: a new logo appeared end of March. Don't have any screenshots, but really just a heads up for any pres enthusiasts who might have access to the channel.

Yes, it's their first new logo since 2005. The surrounding pres has had a refresh as well.

As a side note, their iOS app is awful. There is no sound on the livestream, unless you use headphones; lately, the livestream won't load up at all. It's a shame, as it's not a bad channel if you speak Dutch.
