BBC Regional News on BBC One HD

The nation/region is a matter of opinion, not fact. I say it’s a region, you say it’s a nation. The BBC say it’s a nation because the people in London *think* that will please the people in Wales, probably because they listen to people in Cardiff who of course want more powers for Wales because it makes for better employment prospects.

I was born in Wales, I live in Wales, and to me it is - as a small subdivision of a sovereign state - a region.

As such, I don’t want to see different output to anyone else in the UK. Local news for 30 minutes a day is fine, but nothing more.

I know others disagree - some people are interested in the price of sheep at the Royal Welsh Show - but this is my opinion and I don’t like the BBC telling me that Wales is anything more than a small part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I think as you say Moz your outlook on this depends on which part of Wales you are in. A lot of the North Wales coast has a greater affinity with the North West of England than with Cardiff, with fewer people speaking Welsh there, for example. I suspect the story is the same in other border areas.

At least nowadays a cheap Freesat installation means you can watch network rather than Wales and full-fat Channel 4 rather than the awkward mash up that was the original S4C.

Full fat C4 has been available in Wales on all DTT transmitters since DSO there back in 2011, and on satellite since 1998

Before that as well - it was on D3&4 aka Mux 2 from day 1 - S4C~digidol and S4C~2 were on SDN Mux A, displacing QVC and abc1/TCM IIRC - I think there was some bodge job on one of the other Muxes where QVC timeshared with TVX or something.

I think you're right, though of course only 8 out of 200 or so transmitters in Wales carried DTT
before DSO, so only available to 70-80% of the population ?

I think all the transmitters had it, but maybe not all the repeaters. Given the shocking state of DTT under the OnDigital / ITVDigital regimes (low power, poor quality) even if it was "available" it may not have been "receivable".

Pre DSO, nationally all 50 main sites had DTT and only 30 of the largest ( in terms of population coverage) relays) There were 1080 relays that did not carry DTT until DSO. In Wales the 6 main transmitters carried DTT, plus the relays at Kilvey Hill (Swansea) and Aberdare. Ferryside was a small relay that underwent DSO as an experiment in 2005 I think.

Those 80 initial sites are the same sites that today carry all six main muxes, the remaining 1080 relays only carry the three PSB muxes ( dubbed Freeview Lite)
