I really like the new NY1 theme. Its lite and modern without to being to inappropriate sounding for a newscast. But neither is it tabloidly or too dark to hear multiple times a day.

BBC 9 O'Clock News in the 80s and 90s, great titles and screamed 'authoritative'.

Sky News mid-2001, just before the big rebrand later in the year.

My favorite current news theme is from Hala Gorani Tonight.

Always liked this theme from London Tonight when it was still under LNN.

Yes that's still one of my favourites of all time too. I have fond memories of my parents taking me over to my Nana's house in Grays, Essex in the early 90s as a kid and she'd receive LWT and London Tonight. Of course not forgetting the continuity announcers who'd lead in to the bulletin, Glen Thompsett and Trish Bertram.

Although I preferred this version of the theme...

GREAT theme. Perfect for the capital's news, IMO. Cool

Some more themes from VTM in Belgium:

Het Nieuws, 2004-2008 (love the simplicity of the intro):

Het Nieuws, 2008-2011:

Het Nieuws, 2011-2013:

And a clean version of VRT's wonderful 2002 theme:

As you can tell, I have a soft spot for a lot of the themes used on Flemish TV - their news programmes always seem to have really nice designs and music.

I offer some of my British recordings. London in the late 80's - where I spent 4 years as kid - I still consider a heyday in news pres'. In no order:

The World This Week theme still sends chills 30 years on. It is incredibly bold and self-assured. And completely timeless (listen blind and you would not know it's from 1989). It also perfectly matched the intensely serious and high-brow (internationalist) nature of the program it accompanied.

Enjoy my second clip in higher quality audio

Another of my favourites was the Channel 4 Daily . Everything here was perfect for me.

ITN Generic Theme 1989 - epic.

ITN News at One 1989 - hard to choose between the One, Ten and 5.40 news in '89 as they were all superb. But I still find this sequence beautiful. And the closing brilliant.

Lastly, one from left field - also my recording. International Times is yet another offering from ITN (and their in-house presentation team) that was just a cut above (and hard to say it's from '89).

As for outside ITN - The London Programme was pure dope.

Wait. Copyright issues? What was that?

If I remember rightly, the 2002 theme was withdrawn after a composer claimed that Sky had plagiarised the previous theme, which said composer had written, without their permission. Hence, the mad pianist theme was swiftly written and introduced.

What was the music Sky was claimed to have copied from?

I always thought the 2001 music sounded very similar to the 'RIFF' from the track 'The Race' by 'Yello' which was used for Formula 1 in the early days? Anyone else think this or is it just me being mad!!!!! Like the mad Sky News Pianist lol!!!

The World This Week and International Times were great programmes, and were often part of my weekend viewing around that time. International Times would air at 7:30am, after Comic Book but before Trans World Sport. Sadly, it only lasted about 6 months. The World This Week was a 7pm programme, if memory serves, and basically acted as part Saturday edition of Channel 4 News, part current affairs programme. Not seen the title sequence for that show pop up anywhere yet. And I was a big Channel 4 Daily fan, prefered it to Breakfast News and TV-am.

Among my favourites that haven't been mentioned so far, the original ITN World News theme from 1987.

Also, the ITN World News 1994 version.

CNN International World News, 1992 version

CNN Headline News, 1994 version

Westcountry Live, original version, which lasted for multiple title sequences until about 1998.
