The BBC have confirmed details of coverage of the Commonwealth Games 2018 and no real surprised - it's practically an identical model to the Winter Olympics with coverage live from midnight on BBC1 and BBC2, continuing through to 8pm - though the highlights show kicks off half an hour earlier. BBC4 will then have an extra hour of coverage, plus coverage on the red button.

They seem to be a bit cagey though about how much will be online - they have full rights so no reason to limit the coverage as such but they are selling the games as over 200 hours of coverage, though do mention the "key moments" will be live streamed online and through connected TV. For Glasgow 2014 there was 300 hours of network plus 1300 hours of live action across 17 streams. I really hope they're not deliberately limiting coverage to make their Olympic coverage more comparable in a couple of years time.

The press release confirms Hazel Irvine and JJ Chalmers will be live in Queensland with Clare Balding, Jason Mohamed and Gabby Logan in Salford.

They've got the old Gill Sans BBC Sport logo at the bottom of the article. Very Happy Laughing

It’ll be interesting to see what they do for Birmingham 2022. The obvious option will be to be based at the Mailbox in the canal side studio space.

That’s assuming the BBC gets the rights of course.

I'd expect them to at least use one of the bubble studios somewhere near a venue or in a more iconic Birmingham location instead. There aren't huge benefits to being at the BBC Mailbox in facilities terms. (The One Show had to use a Visions OB truck to make the pilot series there in 2006)

The Mailbox would make for a unrepresentative view for the commonwealth games. Canals, cafes and the cube residential development. Wow.

Where the studio is going to be an interesting one, and exactly where they are going to be based, and what sort of a view it'll be.

The Athletics will be based at what is now (although undergo a massive upgrade and be renamed) the Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr. Aquatics sports are on the other side of the city in Sandwell.

Track cycling the moment is planned to be in err.. Stratford (east London, not the much closer Upon Avon) so finding a high up angle to get even the track and water stadiums is going to be totally impossible.

The IBC is going to take over the newer halls of the NEC (indoor sports, bar the volleyball, weightlifting and gymnastics are taking place in the bigger older part of the main halls of the NEC) so it doesn't leave that much spare places for the main BBC Studio.

Suspect they'll either go for a point outside the main stadium, or find a city centre roof top with views of the city centre and construct a temp studio on that.

Victoria Square would probably be the best location. As it will be a venue in itself but obviously somewhere that is very much at the heart of the city centre.

Why the hell would you not do the cycling at Manchester? Is it booked for something else?

Perhaps the Manchester venue was part of the Liverpool bid?

EDIT: Seems it was.

They narrowed it down to Derby or London but London can basically host more. I don't think distance wise it's much different, and frankly London Velodrome probably needs the event more, although perhaps the proximity with Manchester means that you can just about see Birmingham outside of their Salford window, so they'll host from there. Very Happy

The Glasgow studio was just a temporary (I assume it was demolished) structure outside their Scottish HQ with a view across the river. This could actually be good for the BBC in Birmingham - might see some more stuff being sent there as a result.

Well there aren't any 'real' studios there, and it's currently an SD set-up, but apart from that...

Good one!

Having been to the Derby Velodrome, yes it would be perfect for the 2022 track cycling events, being less than an hour by train from Birmingham, but, unless they take out the back wall and extend, there currently isn't any spare space to put in 1,000+ spectator seating and comms positions.
Manchester is the next ideal place, but having lost the UK dual host city bid, there is now some needle with Birmingham.

So, it terms of distance and facilities the London Olympic velodrome, probably is the best facility to use - and would probably welcome a 10 year old lick of paint refresh.

How can you live stream a 'key moment'?!

200 hours doesn't seem enough. A lot of sports presumably aren't going to be covered beyond highlights.
