I’d highly recommend having a look at TV Ark’s page on Facebook today. They are having a retro day which began at 6:25am for a clip of TV-am from 1983.

I presume there's a technical or functional reason why many TV-Am recordings we now see have the speaking clock audible under them. These are primarily on the new TV-ARK recordings and the ones that Associated Press and Moving Images uploaded to the TV-AM Channel on YouTube over the years and not on the ones from Transdiffusion, which appear to be off-air recordings.

Presumably these were logging tapes made for regulatory reasons, the clock validates exactly what went out when.

Maybe they were captured from a private broadcast network Squidgygate style? Wink

I read that on the master tapes they recorded the regular audio on one channel and the speaking clock on another- presumably the speaking clock is bleeding through.

Or whoever dubbed it off either mono'd the two channels or forgot to mute the second

Someone shared this 1983 Radio Times prediction of what British TV would be like in 2001 on Reddit.
