Up to 1984 on the Network DVDs now- there's one episode that's not very good quality. Looks like a VHS/Beta/U-matic copy that's been zoomed into to cut off a timecode or something. Did they lose the master tape? Seems strange that when they were able to keep all the episodes from the 60s and 70s when so much is lost from that era, that an episode from 1984 seems to have gone walkies. Though as we're losing a 1985 episode of Top Of The Pops on BBC4 this week for what looks like the same reason, it clearly did happen.

And we had a Granada Plus edit on ITV3 today for the first time in ages, a shame these are still turning up!

Exec producer Kieran Robert's final episode went out on Monday. Presumably no replacement, as Emmerdale don't have an exec anymore I don't believe.

Corrie's always gone through periods of having or not having an exec producer. In fact this week on ITV3 we reached the point in 1987 where Bill Podmore became "producer" again, and there was no exec producer until February 1989.

Do ITV have an executive across both soaps - presumably there is some communication between the two to ensure they're not covering the same core storylines at the same time.

Looks like John G. Temple died last month- we only just saw the final episode he produced on ITV3 on Monday:

I think episode 2317 (15th June 1983) has the same problem. It’s not so noticeable on YouTube but when the episode was broadcast on Granada Plus the very poor quality of the film was evident, plus it was very zoomed in (about 1hr 30 into this link)

Oh yes, you can quite clearly see the zoomed in-ness there too!

Might not have been as bad if they'd at least had a non-timecoded version they didn't have to zoom into. Also maybe if the version on the Network DVD was encoded as 16:9 so we at least got the picture missing on the sides (or even left the timecode in, as that's the sort of thing Network have been known to do in the past).

BTW the episode on its own (complete with credits) is on YouTube too, looks like they spliced in the title sequence from elsewhere (they did the same with the episode on the Network DVD, along with the endcap)

I imagine if the original film inserts still exist they could have been rescanned and spliced in too (and would doubtlessly look better than they did originally with modern telecine technology)- but I guess something like that would be well above the budget of Granada Plus even if they did.

As you say, amazing that these episodes from the mid 80s exist in such poor condition.

In fact a look at that omnibus video you posted seems to suggest both the 13th & 15th June episodes are affected by it! Could both episodes have been on the same tape?

In fact, a quick look at YouTube shown the 9 July 1984 episode (the one preceeding the one on the Network DVD) is also like it. Did they put a week's worth of episodes on one tape? Seems strange that both times it happened it affects 2 consecutive episodes- if they put 2 episodes on one tape it would explain it.

Particularly when every episode from the 60s still exists, and every 70s episode exists on its original videotape- in an era when shows were routinely wiped or only kept as black and white telerecordings! Yet it seems 4 episodes from an era after wiping ended have gone walkies.

Yip, the only footage Granada (ITV) claim to not have are the original two dry runs, inserts into the 1969 and 1970 All Star Comedy Carnival and all six episodes of Turn Out The Lights, the spin-off from Pardon The Expression.
