Doing things for show, or to make a point of some kind, I think is what sometimes annoys people. I wouldn't say angry.

Those are the same group of people who get angry when told that Britain had have diversity in Roman times, which it did.

EVen the BBC hate them now since there throw are at least two completed idents...

Proof of this is...?

Have you not notice the two missing idents which has been postage in this thread? included a video; you can see on Latest topic videos?

What is it that's making these people angry? You can't say any white actors have been shunned to star in the film because everybody's made out of f***ing clay! If there's any other argument than "I don't like seeing people who aren't white" I'd like to hear it.

I still dont get way this is being bought up in this thread or else where. When I saw the lassies on the cartins, all I thought wow she disappoint at the new idents Very Happy I never paid much attention to the skin colour..

Can you say anyone you know, has done any of those things in the idents?

Of course. You seriously don't know anyone who had had an allotments, or been to a keep fit class, or enjoys walking up hills? I could go on

I can't say I can. I know one allotment in the area, and after looking up the council website turns out there another two, Most people I know just go to the gym not keep fit classes. Hill walking, its not really a hobby around here mainly because there alot of hills around.

Martin Parrs photography is all about celebrating the quirkiness of British life, I've been a fan of his for a while, but can see how others won't get it.

I dont believe he had celebrated the quirkiness of British life and that where some of the problems lie. I think if there spent a bit more time there could have found some real quirkiness of British life

As for celebrating diversity of communities, well it depends what interpretation of the word community you use. Does my local village Hall host Zumba classes, yes. Are there allotments around the corner? Yes. Do communities by the sea have clubs that go sea swimming, yes.
They're not great as idents, but absolutely they represent the sorts of pastimes that we do. Of course some are niche and eccentric, but as I say people sitting in a pub is common but you can't do that 20 times.
It's also irrelevant that a people outside the UK participate in some of those activites... they are all being done in the UK

I dont think there are niche and eccentric because there could be seen around the world same goes for drinking in the pub.

I get your point. But my point is there are people who will get angry over stupid things, case in point.

The mixed race element of the BBC One idents - and even by typing those words I know I'm heading into tricky waters here: this reminds me of the a newspaper complaining about a mixed race family being in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, and asking how often that happened, only for Jessica Ennis to win a ton of medals. It does happen, just because it didn't happen in "the old days" or in parts of the country that are 99% white. (I can see why it may seem tokenistic or pushed if you live there and don't travel outwith your area) Therefore, it is entirely normal in most of the country to see more than one skin colour represented, and in fact is quite healthy to see more than just generic white people represented because all races who live in the country should be represented.

The Martin Parr idents - after being scathing of them when they were first introduced, I've actually grown quite fond of them. In an era when you're constantly sold commercialised images of people living their best lives and looking stunning on Instagram, making you feel as if your own life is s***, seeing normal people doing incredible mundane things is actually quite healthy.

Well maybe you just don't know many people

If there's a lot of hills near you then you would have seen them. There's a town near me on the edge of a range of hills and you can't go anywhere somedays without a group of people with crampons getting in your way.

But on one hand you're saying they're things that ordinary people don't do.... then you're saying that they're not niche enough?

The Oneness idents would be served better if they were supported by consistent presentation and marketing. The News before 8pm still uses the old Circles music and pres design, they occasionally use the falling O motif, the "Kites" circles ident appeared for a documentary a couple of months ago on Network and the endslides are all over the place. I would be prepared - and content - to see Oneness continue if they just stick with it as their ident package but support it by revamping the surrounding presentation graphics. This would enhance the brand of BBC1 by 100%. I don't disagree with your comments about the normality of mixed race families, but there are times when the BBC and others genuinely do force diversity upon us to tick boxes, and considering non-whites take up less than 10% of our entire population, sometimes they are over represented. This is however, not the case with BBC1's Christmas idents. There is absolutely nothing controversial in the characters portrayed in them.

I do know many many people, ( it could just be most people just dont do most thing the things in the idents) It seems two of them do in deed go hill walking, but there look nothing like the people in the idents mind. It seems I've gone hill walking as well never classed it as that. Bog snorkeling eh? never know that was real quirkiness of British life, like cheese rolling,

I do believe the last statement can be correct. I can accept that Martin work can be great, but is delivery is poor and he doesn't execute it well. That's because of how Martin does his work It's like Doctor looking in your mount he can do it but not as good as a densit.

I will accept some of the ident subject are good, but because of poor delivery, poor selection of other subject matters, and the complete mess the branding etc is in it make the package awful.

Of course, do you think any other country would be that silly? Very Happy

Oh yes, I've always said the execution is wrong. He's a great photographer, but not right for TV

They can show people doing mundane things but it doesn't mean that the ident has to be mundane. TV is a creative medium. Shoot the gatherings from different angles, mix different shots, add some close ups, add an inobtrusive soundtrack and perhaps a more interesting form up of the logo. Actually just do some post production. Not just point a camera and gather some raw footage.

The concept of people doing mundane things is not terrible but the execution is and it's a job half done. I think that's most peoples problem.
