I suspect the Granada UK to Granada Television change was due to the disposal of its motorway service stations and TV set rental subsidiaries.

"Hello, 8827", 4 digit phone numbers! Though my grandparents still had a 5 digit number until 1997 (then they stuck a 6 on the front).

Another thing, can anyone remember when they first moved to Media City, we saw the fourth walls on sets quite a fair bit, like the corner shop, and the fireplace in Number 7 for I think the first time since Don Brennan lived there. Then it all but stopped after a short while, and we barely see them again.

Was it not the case that often people would only quote the last four digits of seven-digit numbers? So at a guess the example you gave might, in full, have been 061 715 8827. Not sure if you could dial just the four digits when phoning someone else on the same exchange?

Well according to this (modern day but presumably the same sort of principle applies)
http://www.area-codes.org.uk/more/about-uk-area-codes.php

I think it was possible to ring somebody from, say 021 530 xxxx to any other 021 530 xxxx number directly if you were on the same exchange or latter part, but you couldn't call 021 705 xxxx from an 021 530 number, you'd need to dial the full number. I may be wrong on that and confusing it with the more simple 0xxx xxxxxx setup which I know you could just dial the 5/6 digit number direct.

Of course these days the entire principle's gone both full circle and out the window as you need to dial the full number with area code when calling from a mobile anyway so the problem solves itself to a degree and frees up shed loads of numbers in the numbering plan.

The episodes aired so far have featured young Jenny Bradley and her father Alan, who as we know became a villain and violently attacked Rita. I'd guess it's only a matter of time before that particular episode shows up on ITV3. Given that when current day soap episodes that might feature violent or upsetting/distressing scenes, their often preceded by a content warning by the CA.

I wonder if the ITV3 airing of that episode is preceded with a similar warning rather than the generic introduction these old episodes are currently getting. As I recall, Rita's injuries from Alan's attack were quite graphic for a pre-watershed drama at the time.

From memory, the opening titles around this time start to slowly develop a videotape scratch (although made on film they've been copied to videotape by now) about halfway through, that gets more and more noticeable as the decade continues. In about 1989 a video 'freeze' is added to cover the scratch, noticeable as the jittery/scratchy film comes to an abrupt stop for about a second, and that lasts until the new titles appear at the end of 1990.

I think all the Granada Plus repeated-episodes are still on Youtube, so should be easy to find the exact point the freeze begins and how bad the scratch gets!

Wasn't the video freeze to cover up the removal of the Granada graphic at the start? Obviously the theme music began playing over the top of that, so once it was removed, and the theme music was playing over the first frame of the title sequence instead, the whole sequence would be a couple of seconds out of sync.

Within the major cities using the 01, 021, 031 etc area codes, you would always dial the last 7 digits if you were within that area, you couldn't just dial the last 4 digits, even if you were on the same exchange. (EDIT - I stand corrected, see below)

However, I recall that we always answered the phone with a greeting which only included the last 4 digits.

I remember that I found it odd when we moved out of the 061 area and had to say a 5 digit (later 6 digit) number.

I do remember that we also had "local codes", which often began with a 9 rather than a 0. They were confusing times. Very Happy

EDIT:
Here is a list of local codes I managed to find. It also states that if you're on the same exchange, you just need to dial the number.

They've already stopped uploading the eps to ITV Hub, and with little promotion it's almost as if they don't want this to work.

You're making this decision after a mere two days? And the ITV hub could be some sort of technical or contractural issue.

March 1989 was when Alan attacked Rita so just over 3 years from the episodes we are currently seeing, but at the rate of 10 per week we should see it next Spring assuming no changes to the schedules.

I do hope the repeats are a success, ive really enjoyed them so far, ive not seen these episodes since Granada Plus aired them in August 2000 so have forgotten some of it.
