(Anna Maria Ashe thinking she's recording a London Tonight rehearsal and signing off in a bizarre jokey way, not realising she's actually live).

I've seen that clip before, she also mutters "god" under her breath after reading out one of the stories coming up on a later bulletin. The sign-off was something like "goodbye, lots of love, miss you" while blowing kisses at the camera. Probably got in a lot of trouble for that!

I mostly remember it because it was up on YouTube amongst another clip from presumably the same LNN christmas tape, where a Richard Littlejohn talk show was interrupted by porn from RTL (which presumably someone in engineering was watching!).

That clip is priceless, it cuts to a slide for Littlejohn and Peter Lewis was duty announcer sounding really shocked, not seen it online for a while now.

I'm sure the same tape features Mary Nightingale referring to Mr Keith Hunt as another word rhyming with hunt.

That's right, it was an LNN outtake compilation or something. I've been dying to see it again but it's pretty difficult requesting that Littlejohn incident and still retain any dignity.

BBC & ITN UK News Coverage of Elvis' Death - 1977

Thanks for sharing that - my dad's birthday is the same day as Elvis' death (the day and month, not the year) so it's a bit of a 'flashbulb moment' for him. From what I've read elsewhere on the web, initial rumours of his death were reported at the end of News at Ten before ITN came on air immediately after the break with a newsflash confirming the news.

Another fascinating clip, audio only, is of John Peel announcing the news on his Radio 1 show. Note that he decides not to turn the programme into a tribute and continues with the normal show.

(This was originally uploaded to SoundCloud but in an annoying fake stereo with the clip inverted on one channel, which means it doesn't fold down to mono meaning it sounds like there is no sound on a mobile speaker, so I have converted it to mono for your enjoyment).

Those newsreaders (apart from Angela Rippon) look like the sort of people who wouldn't have known much about Elvis or his music, and probably would have tut-tutted at it as it was a "noise" and music was "better in their day".

Plenty of signs of Diana-esque mass hysteria there too, 20 years in advance! People viewing his body saying they were "upset" and he "looked ill"- he was a corpse, what were they expecting? And it's not like he looked good the last few years of his life either!

I wonder if he still had the strain on his face from trying to force the poo out.

Ooh, it's my mum's birthday as well. Small world, eh? In fact Marc Bolan died on my sister's birthday and Kurt Cobain died on my birthday, so clearly my family has something of a curse on pop stars.

In the News at Ten book they talk about Reginald Bosanquet breaking it at the end of News at Ten, and also that they were terribly confused because they received the flash on the wires that he was dead, and then thirty seconds later received one that said he was in hospital. In fact what had happened was that the death report was sent out after, but made top priority so it arrived first, but as the book points out, that meant rumours that he wasn't dead had started within thirty seconds of his death been announced.

Apparently ITV made a pilot of a revamped Play Your Cards Right hosted by Vernon Kay and these were the titles that accompanied it...
