International News Presentation: Past and Present

The J-Alert feels a bit different to the Early Earthquake Warning. Usually there would be a notification-like sound thing but this one's don't.

The NTV News 24 video has the long siren warning with the latter part read slowly.

This comparison shows how different Japanese TV networks react to the J-Alert warning:

With the EEW system, you know that a tremor will occur within a couple of minutes (depending on location). With a missile, you can't say for certain what will happen, which is why there isn't enough time for a nice, little chime. THE MISSILE COULD STRIKE AT ANY MOMENT AFTER THE WARNING IS ISSUED! YOU WOULD HAVE NO TIME TO LOSE! (Bold used for dramatic effect.)

Moving on, here are the evening news programs broadcast on NHK:

News 7 is the daily evening newscast with the format just like any other country, while News Watch 9 focuses on in depth stories of the news of the day just like NHK's commercial competitors but one hour early. Neither commercial stations have their prime time newscast between 7 to 10 pm unlike other countries. Instead they have a news update and weather just before 9 pm. But the late newscast are as usual between 10 pm and 12 am.

Both newscasts mentioned above have their new look earlier in April. News 7 previous look lasted for a year. No need to ask but they already have English translation audio although they're not in the embeded video in the post above.

The most peculiar part is News Check 11. I'm not sure how to say this but it's not like any newscast in other countries. It is aimed towards younger audiences (probably because they prefer stay up late at night), while the former two are for general audience. The theme music as appeared in the intro is from the same guy who did the theme for TV Asahi's Super J Channel in 2010 which is Yasutaka Tanaka. The studio set is a replica of a typical radio studio (not your usual radio conty studio) and is more laidback style. The lower third has the viewers' tweets. The last part has one of the number one song playing over the weather forecast which changes everyday.

NHK has partnerships with various broadcasters for news reports just like any other country.

I never watch NHK newscasts on TV. But I do have some knowledge on the newscasts.

LCI's soft area has had a small tweak.

Another note: News Watch 9 prefers to have a cold open instead of a typical news opener. Also News Watch 9's studio set now looks a bit laidback. Previously it looked sedate. Also each newscast have their own meteorologists.

You might have know this but Japan prefers to change their newscasts from every three to six months to every few years to improve ratings or other reasons. The theme tunes of some newscasts prefer to have some string instruments sounds, some want piano, others don't. It's not like in Brazil or France or maybe any other country.

Another peculiar thing is they love graphics on printed cardboards and models.

In Australia, the production of the only local newscast serving Darwin, Northern Territory, is moving to Queensland.

If I remember correctly, the Darwin edition of Seven News, before it was canceled about 15 years ago, was also produced in Queensland.

An interesting "birth of a station" from 1984; Spanish-language station KNBN in Dallas relaunches as English-language KRLD and begins its lineup with a newscast:

Almost akin to ITV merging Border with Tyne Tees in Newcastle, except this is more like moving news from Land's End to the Shetlands, distance wise.

For a few years in the mid-'00s, Network Ten's Perth news (from station NEW-10) was produced in Sydney. In terms of distance, that's roughly the equivalent of London's local news being produced in Cyprus. Here's a clip from that era:
