When they were replaced with the square and stripes I think most people here would have thought that was an improvement, and no doubt that package served C4 well - but now a generation on I'd probably say the circles were the better package. I guess where they failed is they had two logos fighting against each other - indeed I wonder if the original intention may have been to completely replace the logo with the 4 circles, but it was retained within one of the circles as a compromise. Similarly wonder if the same style might have worked without the circles but with a glass effect C4 logo taking centre stage.
The circles era is much better with age. I remember thinking the whole thing was so bland, and it probably is compared to any other C4 package but still it's not really 'bad'.

At least other channels on the platform, notably the BBC's, were 16:9 from the word go.
More of an irony was at a press launch OnD were giving away handheld portable TVs, equipped of course with analogue only tuners
Gotta love the irony of an OnDigital promo featuring helicopters carrying round 16:9 panes of glass......on a 4:3 channel.

Presumably a case of pulling in whoever was still around at that time of night and shoving them in front of a camera!

The two infamous Grand Nationals of the 1990's, which I remember watching at the time
First the shambolic 1993 race that never was
and then 4 years later when Aintree was evacuated due to a bomb scare. Includes the handback to Gary Lineker at the end, who was very new to presenting at the time
