Personally the documentaries section is the one genre I miss since I left pay TV and went Freeview and the fuss created when Discovery threatened to leave Sky last year shows I'm not alone

Discovery, National Geographic and their spin off channels really are grim though. No substance and what content there is, is sensationalised. Very little dispassionate thought given.

I know some people don't like the crime programming, but I've found C+I and Investigation Discovery (ID) excellent.

Discovery History is another decent channel for actually showing history docs instead of reality nonsense.

National Geographic was always a decent channel, I'm not sure what its like since it became fully owned by a Murdoch company though

There's a lack of/limited budget for new/acquired programming and that's the main cause (a common complaint internally), especially for Discovery's non-flagship genre sister channels. Hence why the schedule seems a little de ja vu, except if they rerun a 'new' programme from the main flagship channels on the genres..

For me its an important thing, the whole UK vs Imports thing. I would want to encourage more new production in this country. Sadly, about 80% of the material shown on the multi-channels are repeats, with the vast majority of new or first run material, being imports, mainly from the US, but also from Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Most of the new material produced here airs on BBC, ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5 and their various associated channels. Most of Sky's first run output is either on Sky News or Sky Sports, with Sky 1 doing the most new commissions out of the multi-channels.

You're deliberatly getting sidetracked.

I don't think anyone doesn't want to encourage more British TV production, but that doesn't mean that imports automatically = bad telly. There's still plenty of content on pay TV that makes it in demand and therefore a strong offering
