I've posted a similar thing in the GMB thread but I'll expand a bit more here.
If ITV want to get more viewers for the news they need to try and offer an alternative to the BBC rather than try to compete for the same type of viewers. Especially if they want the same viewers to watch The Nightly Show (and maybe more viewers!). Anyway if they went for a more informal approach to attract a different audience then using the GMB studio could allow them to offer a different type of presentation which is more flexible and creative than that of the BBC.

First off, welcome to TVF, you're gonna love it here.
Secondly, I agree with you. Like with Channel 4 and elections, ITV should follow something similar.
GMB is less successful than ITV News is, so I can't see why they'd go down that road.
The expectation of viewers is for ITV News to be exactly the same as the BBC News, any alternative take is seen as the wrong take. That's the place we are now at.
So for example on GMB. Doing the news and then moving to a bit of entertainment is seen as wrong and criticised, because the programme is compared on a like to like basis with Breakfast.
Also ITV News is made by ITN and hence its done in a studio at ITN. GMB is made by ITV Studios and hence done at ITV.
While I accept that GMB doesn't beat Breakfast, by doing something different they do get an audience that prefer it to the BBC. The issue is viewing figures at that time is that there isn't a whole load of them to start with.
My point about the main ITV bulletins, eel more NaT or 10:30 is that if they want to be competeive of 10, and that doesn't necessarily mean beat the BBC, then they need cohesion between The Nightly Show and the news.
At the moment it seems to me TNS is aiming for people who don't want to watch the news at ten, however it's also meant to be topical so to understand the monologue you need to at least have an awareness of the news. So is switch the shows around and make the NaT a more accessible programme for those who want a rundown of the news but nothing too in depth, I guess in newspaper terms the i. Then TNS may make more sense and you have an hour of programming and that's clearly aimed at a clear audience who won't be be watching BBC News or Newsnight.

Thank you.
On that point ITV did so this with the Royal Wedding and IIRC the Jubilee. There's a way of doing something serious but in a different way to the BBC.
Poor show from ITV today. Local news cancelled because the horse racing overran. But they could've just replaced You've Been Framed - a repeat - with something 5 or 10 minutes shorter.

I dont think that is the case, I think the local was never to broadcast in the first place. The show can't overrun.... its finished at 17.30. so for 50mins it was just chat.

Not sure if other regions did this, but Calendar recorded a bulletin which was posted online instead...
The 🐎 🐎 were a bit late, so there's no time for us on TV tonight. Here's a round-up of our headlines: pic.twitter.com/YhZQfeNXHj

Indeed. An absolutely appalling excuse from ITV and shows just how much they care for local news. It was quite clearly not over running.
The race did get underway a good 5 or 6 minutes late to be fair.
The "chat" you dismiss is an established part of the broadcast, including the full rerun of the race, interviews with the winning jockey, trainer etc.
Ideally there would have been a shorter version of YBF available, there would have been years ago but these days they only seem to come in either 30 or 60 minute editions.
