Although it's probably not the official ILR station for Chester, Radio city 96.7 I believe can be picked up in that city.

It can, but (as with all the legacy ILRs) it's totally emasculated itself broadcasting content of anything meaningful or useful for Merseyside, never mind Chester.

Chester does have a local station, Dee 106.3. No idea how good or bad or useful it is

Also Meridian's studios in Newbury and New Hythe spring to mind as slightly non-obvious locations (though New Hythe is quite close to Maidstone, and Newbury is a reasonably big town in that part of the Meridian sub-regions)

I believe Meridian's franchise application stated they were going to have a studio in King's Hill (business park near West Malling - with a few blue chip company bases), but New Hythe was cheaper. As it happens, the studio at New Hythe was well built, with a reasonably high ceiling, soundproofed, next to the gallery. Better than some other studios I've been in.

Location wise, not the smartest industrial site, but reasonable access to the M20, in the days when all material was driven or biked back to base for editing.

I seem to remember that Virgin were going to have studios in Ashford, had they won the franchise. Not sure where Carlton were going to be.

Talking of Virgin, there was a plan to base Virgin 1215 in Woking. There were empty studios there as County Sound merged with Radio Mercury and the local station there was closed down.

In the end they went for the better located and slightly more iconic 1 Golden Square where the station still is along with many others

Just to clarify - it wasn't strictly speaking Virgin TV, but a consortium called CPV-TV that would've built studios in Ashford. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPV-TV Chrysalis, Paradine (David Frost) and Virgin/Branson. Good old Wikipedia!

I remember the TV Times suffered from similar industrial action, notably in 1980. Often national editions would be produced, or trimmed-down editions with very little additional content. Sometimes there would be no issue produced at all.

York was one of the last stations to launch, in the early 80s. They covered the whole country from the start (well, apart from Skipton where the signal is atrocious)

Radio Tees (as it is now known) was on air well before Radio York, and covered a large part of North Yorkshire, officially and unofficially. Are the northern parts of the county (the areas bordering the Tees Valley, etc) covered by both stations in terms of news content?

Radio Tees? BBC Tees, thank you. There will only ever be one Radio Tees 257. And yes, there is an overlap, but mainly on BBC Tees.

The BBC station started out as BBC Radio Teesside, then Cleveland, and once the coast was clear, and those vulgar commercial johnnies up the road had been safely consumed into the EMAP/Bauer empire, BBC Tees

I grew up on Radio Tees / TFM and it was certainly the better out of the 2 back in the day till Bauer came along and trashed it all.

Yes, a situation mirrored in many areas

Though don't the Bauer stations end up in a better state than ones that ended up with Global? More local rather than just pseudo national relays

Well, they kept their identities anyway. Common logos, sure, but they kept the local names.

Lots of local programming too, not just a breakfast show and then over to London for the rest of the day
