Most US National breakfast programmes are tape delayed except in ET. For example, The Today Show generally only airs live in the Eastern Time Zone at 7 AM. It is shown on tape delay at 7 AM in the five other time zones located in the United States. If there is breaking news the day of the taping, The Today Show will broadcast a live West Coast edition. The live feed will play out for the first hour then return to the taped East Coast version. Local affiliates will be given two five minutes time periods during the hour to break to local news. These occur at :25 and :55. Generally, local weather updates are given during these times.
Most of the national breakfast shows are preceded by hours of local news broadcasts, some starting as early as 4am.
Breakfast Television (BT) on Citytv started of course as a local show on Citytv Toronto eventually as the network spread across Canada local versions were created, most continue to air after many of the City stations' dumped their local newscasts, the breakfast shows proved to be popular viewing.
Yes, in that situation local breakfast shows make more sense but I don't think it is that common in countries with multiple time zones, though in the case of post-show breaking news I think the US versions do go into live mode in the West.

CTV's Your Morning for all intents and purposes is a national program. The program is simulcasted on the national CTV News Channel to supplement viewers primarily west of Ontario. CTV stations west of Ontario airs a local breakfast program. Those in Ontario eastward will view Your Morning on their CTV stations.
And in terms of timezones? Pfff, it was an afterthought by CTV. I guess those in the Pacific time zone will never get to see Your Morning!
Slightly odd how CTV's 'Your Morning' show isn't really national.

It was an interesting time period in Canadian broadcasting, very tumultuous. Never seen anything like it. They were trying to stave off Citytv and Moses Znaimer (Citytv Creator) and the copied the Citytv/CityPulse format. It was a blatant rip off. Citytv eventually launched a Newnet station in nearby Victoria and Citytv Vancouver a few years later. Canadian tv was almost like the Wild West back then.
This was an interesting morning format; VTV's
Vancouver Breakfast
in 1998, before the affiliation changes that rocked Vancouver (the station is now a part of CTV):

Here are some more bits and pieces of Vox from that period:
The launch of Germany's Vox from January 1993, when it was a mostly news-and-information service (The format was unsuccessful and Vox eventually relaunched as a general entertainment channel):

A bit of fun from the Netherlands' election - presenters on Denmark's TV2 News have a crack at delivering the news in Dutch.
