I'm not convinced it was a pilot as such, Genome suggests it was always going to be a one-off show:

http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/bbctwo/england/1995-11-08#at-23.15 posted:

In this special one-off chat show Bob Monkhouse talks to Ben Elton about his techniques, styles, working methods and influences. As well as being recognised as one of the country's leading comic talents, Ben Elton is also a scriptwriter, successful novelist and playwright.

Another addition to the one-off airing club - aired at the time above, never seen or mentioned again. But yes, would have been interesting to see more.

Although, of course, as David Walliams pointed out on Celebrity Squares, "We're calling this a Christmas special so if it doesn't get picked up for a series we can pretend it was only supposed to be a one-off".

Not sure if this has one has been mentioned before - but, courtesy of Benriggers, some BBC2 continuity from Easter Monday 1999, featuring one of the very last appearances of the BBC Sport atom globe after nearly eleven years:

And, four days later, the preview programme for that year's Grand National, with use of Gill Sans Bold in the title and the graphics:

And not long after that Grandstand re-recorded the theme tune... then went back to the original after only a few weeks.

I never knew Mark Chapman was once a continuity announcer!

He did it on UK Gold for quite a while in the early 00s as well.

Chappers isn't the only BBC Sport presenter who used to be a continuity announcer

BBC News bulletin from New Year's Eve 1997 in full with Nicholas Witchell and the last The National Lottery Live of the year with Carol Vorderman (sporting a tiara) in full.

From the same channel, even more rarely an ITN News Report on Channel 4, at closedown, circa 1983/84:

Well, funnily enough, when I first heard him do the sport on the radio, I thought "Ooh, it's that continuity announcer doing the sport!".

Amazing how elaborate the lottery shows were then, mounting that massive presentation for New Year's Eve. That main story on the news about Jack Straw's son, for it was he, was a massive talking point at the time. I remember it was the same time C4 showed Mr White Goes To Westminster, Guy Jenkin's weak satire about Martin Bell, and I recall Private Eye slagging it off for being really obvious and unfunny, and saying "Presumably, a C4 commissioner can look forward to coming back from their Christmas holidays and finding a script from Guy Jenkin on their desk about a cabinet minister called John Grass and his wayward son."

I remember him when he was an announcer, and him leaving TV to go to Radio 1. He was excellent but a bit wasted in continuity, but then I thought sports news was a bit of an odd move. But of course he went from that to sidekick and then to telly

Why is Sandy Gall doing a Channel 4 News report?
