Geez just give it a wipe... How hard can it be.

EDIT: Surprised to find out its a Telegenic OB.. Thought they were quite good!

And what if the lens box is well over the parapet of the camera gantry, and therefore inaccessible to anyone leaning over the edge of it with a dry cloth?

Very in some situations. If you're using a large box lens on certain mountings in certain positions you won't be able to safely reach the front of your lens, and in others certainly not quickly.

They are. Though they won't neccessarily be providing the camera operators. These days most OB providers (CTV, Arena, Timeline, Telegenic, NEP Vision etc.) will provide a single guarantee operator or assistant (who may or may not be staff) and then either the OB provider OR the production team will book operators for the other positions.

The industry now is VERY freelance. You can do OBs with crews of 50 or more and often find only five or fewer are staff. (And they are usually guarantees)

Going back to Champions League rights - an interesting article from the Guardian, it appears that both BT and Sky are seeking an FTA partner for the rights. Whether it's dead certain that'll haplen who knows, but it sounds positive.

The situation might kind of be going full circle - we were at a point where FTA broadcasters were having to share rights with pay-TV broadcasters to cover the expected fees and now it might be getting to the point where pay-TV broadcasters need subsidising by FTA broadcasters to win the rights.

Would rather see UEFA sell a live package directly to FTA broadcasters though rather than BT and Sky having to partner with a broadcaster, where in reality it's likely ITV is the only option.

Seems to be a challenging match to cover

They had a brief Blue Screen of Death a few minutes into the second half and then presumably switched to a backup but without audio so there was silence. There was a slight picture judder just before the penalty so I guess that was the main feed coming back (the DOG animated off a split second before the switch back, I wonder why?) Anyway, nice animated apology caption.

That didn't appear on the BT Sport 2 feed as shown in pubs, the blue screen appeared for literally a couple of seconds, then a silent feed for maybe 10 seconds, then back to normal.

Normally when the pres suite take their mixer into emergency cut, the bug disappears entirely. Not seen it do something like that before.

BT Sport 2, Showcase and 4K UHD each have their own playout director, so wouldn't necessarily have reacted to the loss of incoming feed in exactly the same way.

I take it the blue screen of death your referring to is likely what appears when a satellite signals lost?

Although it might not be what happened in this case, the bug does stay on with emergency cut on Showcase, along with BTS3, because of the slightly different system they run on compared to 1 & 2, where it would indeed dissappear.

Most of the time, if you see a bug quickly disappear and then reappear in the same place, it means the automation is taking into a new event - as far as the automation's concerned, the bug has to animate off as it is at the end of a part, and then reappear as if it is the start of a new part. For example, a new event with a different source might be placed next in the schedule as another way of getting that source to air.

Quite often you'll see this happen with the bug if a live event is crossing the 6am threshold, because that's when the new broadcast day starts and for the sake of the schedulers and the 'as-run' reports, a second event with exactly the same source as before 6am is taken into. It's for the same reason that even across most channels that show nothing live, you'll see an event (bumpers, idents, programmes - depending on the channel) always start at dead on 6am every morning.

Dolby Atmos has now made its way on to European games - it's on tonight's Europa League match from Man Utd, and will also be on next week's Champions League game at Man City.

Scheduling nightmares for BT this week with so much rain at the WTA in Doha, Qatar. Play has started earlier than planned, and then suspended for long periods. They put on extra programmes yesterday morning and today. The final is scheduled for 15:00 tomorrow but there are still quarter finals to be completed.

Now they've had to put the tennis on the red button since 19:00 to make way for live rugby. One semi final still to play after the current one. Sam Smith and Anne Keothavong have had a long day, seems they are handing over to the world feed for it.
