An aviation incident + Presidential election campaign = Peak CNN?

Very close to Peak CNN, but surely to reach that level Wolf would have to be hosting.

Isn't Richard Quest their Aviation expert?

They somehow managed to put about six aviation analysts/safety analysts/air crash "experts" on air within about 20 minutes.

I may joke, but it seems the formula is working for them - commercially, at least:

CNN will make approximately $100 million in television and digital advertising revenues more than it would expect in the typical election year.

TV NEWSER reports

Quote:
The Washington Post reports CNN is poised to hit a record $1 billion in profit this year. CNN’s revenue has topped $1 billion for several years, but this is the first time in its 36 years it could see $1 billion in profit. CNN’s hiring spree spree over the last year has sent costs up, but seems to have added to the bottom line.

Pretty impressive for CNN. No matter how anybody feels about CNN's change in coverage and editorial policies, more people are actually watching CNN — unlike six years ago.

Clearly this election is doing wonders for the whole company. CNNI today claiming to be "the most watched news channel in the world", complete with new ad:

Still though, doesn't stop their own staff taking the pee somewhat:

Its still basis and crap. Thank goodness for the BBC, or sky or even ITN.

Sky News is better than CNN International? It's not even a global news service. That's like saying BFM TV is better.

Ah, the devil's always in the fine print. "Ipsos Affluent Survery Global 2016." I couldn't find that specific survey, but going off information on the Ipsos website and previous CNNI press releases, the claim in that ad probably means "most watched news channels in the world...among a survey in 87 countries of English-speaking adults ages 25-54 with an annual income of at least €80,000." So CNNI is the most watched news channel in what's probably the only demographic that CNNI advertisers care about. That's not completely meaningless, but we've seen many TV networks (usually CNN, MTV, the BBC, Al Jazeera, and TV5MONDE) time and time again cherry pick data to purport that they're the most watched channel in the world. But the methodology and scope of these global surveys and estimates only goes so far, and it's really only meant for shopping to advertisers and making slick promos like that one.

Its still basis and crap. Thank goodness for the BBC, or sky or even ITN.

Of those, only the BBC is really a direct competitor to CNN, and last I checked, ITN and CNN are content sharing partners. Yes, Sky News has Sky News International, but it doesn't have any live programming unique to itself, unlike CNNI, which is a completely separate network from CNN US aside from a few hours of simulcasts here and there.

Surprised to see Sky News so high in the mix, to be honest.

I'm guessing this includes the various channels like Sky News Arabia and Sky News Australia. Hard to see how the UK version with the clock and ads removed could come so close to the BBC's global channels.

"Multiplatform" is the operative word for that chart. It's not just TV included within those figures.

That CNN advert may be of some interest to the Advertising Standards Authority. The last time I checked, poor people also count as viewers

The only part of that advert the ASA would be interested in is the fact that they haven't made it abundantly clear what measuring methodology they are using. The term 'affluent viewers' is legally perfectly acceptable. In the corporate world, nobody loves the C2DEs - or poor people as you call them. Capitalism is cruel and cold. That's life.
