For years now Sky News have been doing the red/blue thing, combined with heavy Star Wars desks and light panels around. It has become so tired and old looking. This completelly new look and direction is a welcome change. A more natural, relaxed feel and colours plus an impressive background that will probably look amazing when the building is full of people.
I wonder if we might see all sorts of different backgrounds/animations used on that screen - hence it's size, so the presenters could sit on either side of the desk depending which hour/show they are presenting. Building view or "wallpaper" on screen gives loads of scope for lots of possibilities.
I've noticed some US networks - ok, mostly CNN - change a background animation behind the presenters depending on the show.
Could be wrong, but guessing is part of the fun/anticipation.
PS - I think the discussion in this thread is actually quite tame by TVF speculation/opinion standards. The Channel 4 rebrand - now that was/is an opinion splitter!
And - yes - that's a helluva big screen there. Nice tho.
Looks like it will depend on how it's being used - in these images a couple of pages back - it looks really good, and just the right size. Will be interesting to see what uses will make it on air.
I guess that positioning presenters on different sides of the desk in different shows is quite possible.
We can see a round view of the studio from this vid of Kay Burley, and the side Charlotte sits in also has a great view and can be used as well, so practically all 4 sides can be used depending on the show.
I will admit that there is a lot more space in the box than I initially feared but most of that has been achieved by having the smaller desk & having the cameras suspended from the roof - had they kept them at ground level which I imagined it would have looked a right mess. I still have a concern that with this box there isn't really anything they can do to evolve it in the future.
I don't like the shot from outside the box during an interview it looks a bit of a mess having the lights over the face and broken up by the panels of glass - I hope they ditch that as an idea.
Does anyone know if the floor is finished? Not a fan of that strip down the middle - it might look better if the gap was the same at both sides.
We seem to be seeing a lot of pictures of presenters standing up which is interesting as they have all but phased that out
The ticker round the box looks impressive for the few seconds each hour we will see it
I wonder how they will do the paper review with such a small desk - maybe 1 reviewer to cut costs or 1 either side of the presenters or they might go sit by the screen as a picture shows the press preview set up but then how could they do the weather straight after it
I'm intrigued as to why afternoons are coming from Westminster for these rehearsals to take place - why can't they stay at sky news centre if its all controlled from there anyway?
Seems rather silly to launch sunrise with SJ and JS in the current studio and then 1 week later shift to the box so maybe we will get other presenters for that week before the move.
As for Skygeek I'm sad to see him go but he didn't like any negative comments on the channel and I had stopped posting because I got fed up of getting jumped on all the time & all the sarcastic comments.

The glass box is controlled by the current Sky News gallery, so that's needed for rehearsals too. Presenter and gallery are both at Millbank for the afternoons.

That makes sense thanks for the quick reply - I thought id read that the Westminster output was controlled from Sky News Centre too - is that usually the case?

Generally it is controlled from Osterley. But on occasions such as these where the Osterley gallery is needed, the whole production can come from Millbank.

NO!!!
Save me from a recurrence of the nightmare of the 'wallpaper background' on the ITN/ITV News Channel . . .

This won't be popular but I used to love that studio before they made the whole thing virtual bar the desk. Best bit was with the breaking news magnifying glass background which then broke up into loads of breaking news which grew and shrunk in the backdrop

Baring in mind Sky News have an open plan glass box studio overlooking offices and the ITV News channel were in a traditional television studio with no real newsroom view I find it unlikely the presenter is going to have their back to the newswall/big screen constantly.
I'm liking the look of the new studio/space and it looks like we may see a return to some presenting from the screen and some France24 standing at a desk style presentation which certainly looks more relaxed than what we have from the SNC at the moment.
I like the way the desk can be raised and lowered, it gives a certain degree of flexibility that a fixed height desk lacks. Works well for the beeb in studio B and also when they were in the box opposite the olympic park in 2012.

I would imagine the opening and ad break shots would be outside the cube. Special reports and programme opens showing the big screen. The other shots would be with the building as the background.
There may be other locations in the building used for other things. I would like to see the Paper Review for instance, in a soft sofa area, maybe outside a canteen. Possibly with the glass cube and ticker small in the background.
