They ran a straight bulletin and it got poor viewing figures
They changed it to the Tom Bradby bulletin, and it still gets poor viewing figures.
There comes a time they will be wondering why they are restricting themselves so they can air something that most people aren't that bothered about. They can't ever air 90 minute dramas during the week, just so they can finish at 10pm in time for everyone to turn over to BBC1. I'm not surprised the new man is change is asking these questions.

Regarding 8pm/8:30pm. FIrstly nobody wants a second bulletin so early in the evening, secondly ITV is not the channel that can make wholesale changes to the structure of people's viewing habits. Only BBC1 has this strength. If ITV ran news there you would find BBC1 starting hour long major programmes there which would run past 9pm killing off ITV's own offerings.

I'm guessing though it'll be bumped on Wednesdays again soon to make way for Champions League highlights.

Since January, ITV has aired CL highlights at 10:40 (I'm aware that the highlights were shown at 10 on some Wednesday nights late last year.

They were shown at ten in the group stages when all the British teams were guaranteed to be playing every week and there were more fixtures, plus matches couldn't go to extra time. The latter is probably the main reason why it shifted from ten o'clock.

Long gone are the days though where ITV had the budget for 2 part 90 minute dramas airing every week. The content isn't there at all to justify moving the news now - we saw how much they struggled in the late 90s and that was at a time when they had drama most nights of the week plus regular post-news content too which could be shifted to 10pm.

As you say though judging the bulletin alone both the straightforward bulletin and News at Toms haven't seen the ratings move. Makes you wonder if a brief 15 minute bulletin around 11pm might be the best option. Rolling Eyes

UK broadcasters seem to have given up on getting an audience after half 10 now - the old theory that people took the end of the 10pm news as a signal to go to bed, and the BBC making cutbacks here there and everywhere seem to have impacted.

The News at Ten on ITV can only really have one major plus now - politics. Putting it solidly in prime-time and investing in it gives the impression that ITV is serious about news, which will always help when they need to win over politicians in the future.

The last thing we need is dramas which fit perfectly well in a 60 minute timeslot being stretched to last another half hour - it's bad enough reality shows which used to take up half an hour of your time now drag into two hours.

I wonder will it help ITV to influence the government into dropping Contract Rights Renewal.

It's also good for the brand to have strong news and current affairs programmes, and ITV need to justify their EPG position in a post-switchover world.

STV does this well with Scotland tonight which help kill of BBC scotland dire show. I think 11.10pm is when there put out stuff which is either a repeat or new content not screened on stv.

If ITV are going to get anywhere with news I think they need to make a bold decision rather than flip flopping around. News At Ten is never going to win the slot as long as BBC News is opposite. It became irrelevant as soon as the 10 O'Clock News was launched in its absence.

This may sound ridiculous on face value, but perhaps a news programme at 8pm would be a better move. It would get a strong lead in from the soaps, act as a spoiler for the BBC 10 and allow ITV a clear run of the rest of the evening.

It does sound ridiculous. News from 6-7pm and then again from 8pm? They're not going to shift the teatime quizzes any time soon, after all.

I was factoring in some changes at the early evening end of the schedule, but didn't really want to get into fantasy schedules Smile

We shouldn't take it as read that the Evening News has to exist forever - don't forget it wasn't until the initial demise of News At Ten did the Evening News come into being as ITV News' flagship. Effectively, behind the scenes the Evening News was NaT moved to 6:30pm.

This is a terrible time for ITV in general, but that's for another thread.
The point I'm gonna make here, is that if they don't start getting ratings soon, News at Ten will be axed, which will be fine by some but the media may not like it......

Personally I think the news will be better at 8pm, maybe for half an hour, and a local news at 10 for half hour, but doubt that will ever happen.
