Tom Scott knows what he's talking about and can reduce a complicated thing like the bitrate of videos into a form that anybody can follow. I'm stuffed if I could explain it to anybody else the way he has.

That man has come a long way from his initial video "two drums and a cymbal fall off a cliff" Smile

New season of Citation Needed coming soon too Wink

Anyway, away from Messrs Scott, Gray, Brannan and Joel, WhoProductions has had another crack at the BlockBusters opening titles.

The first edition of Central News is now in full on YouTube after many years of just having the opening minute.

The first story? Central itself.... and how it's Nottingham studios were in complete darkness on it's opening night due to an industrial dispute with the Electricians. What wasn't known at the time was that the East Midlands edition was not to air for another month, with the dispute carrying on for nearly 20 months!

Wendy Nelson and Bob Warman are the hosts, frequent faces of the predecessor ATV Today and the latter still reading the news on Central today, and has been for nearly 37 years!

Also watch for a bemused continuity announcer (possibly Jo Wheeler) at the very start of the clip who I presume wasn't supposed to appear at that time.

I bloody love Tom Scott - he's already been on TV on some tinpot digital channel

Not sure Sky1 would be thrilled with that description!

I thought the first edition from Nottingham did go ahead for the benefit of various dignitaries who were present, but was not seen outside of the building.

How was it resolved? I know it took 18months but I;ve never found anything about how it was sorted out? plus I wonder if there FULL copy of that East opening floating around. I;ve seen a clip.

Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of the Manchester bomb. Here is a BBC1 News Report recorded on a tape I have of Trooping the Colour '96. Note that Trooping the Colour was broadcast in 14:9 two years before the launch of digital and the 1998 14:9 tests.

The untransmitted one? I doubt in the circumstances anyone would have a copy

I've seen a clip of what went out in the east and it was as the west but with an announcement over a slide before the bulletin started explaining the industrial action.

Presumably that's why the west saw an announcer, they had to have something while the east had that. Would have been nice if they'd told her or cued her!

Following the previous video from the Manchester bombing on this day 20 years ago, BBC North West Tonight have uploaded video of the entire bulletins that were broadcast on the day. Disappointingly they appear to be off air VHS copies, but on the plus side they've kept in the idents from BBC1 North (with a badly misaligned globe) and BBC2 North.
