There's so much spare white space; I really don't understand why they don't go for two-line text, especially when they're trying to fit so much into the box. I find it hard to read when it's all squashed up like that.

I mocked up very quickly how the same text would look over two lines. While I'm biased, I think it looks much better and is much easier to read than when squashed on one line.

If you see when the straps animate up to show the name of the guest/ reporter, you will understand why it's on one line.

My absolute favourite era - circa 2007. If anyone can dig up some longer cuts of these, the music gets even better!

CNN is now using Helvetica instead of Gotham for its graphics. This comes after a few months ago they changed the ticker from using Gotham to Helvetica. The change could be because the CNN website too uses Helvetica.

Apparently the font they use is a new one called CNN Sans.

Doesn't matter what they call it — that's still just Helvetica. Too bad they didn't go back to Univers. It's still all over the promos and idents, and it has much more character than Helvetica.

It's CNN Sans. Whole different proprietary typeface from Helvetica.

Okay, I see the "1" has a foot in CNN Sans, and there are probably some very minor differences, but it's still a derivative of Helvetica. At least it's good to see that they're making a conscious effort to try and get everyone on the same page. It seems like for the last two years or so, the on-air graphics have been Gotham, election graphics still Univers, and all the on-air promos and idents have beeen using a mix of Univers and Helvetica.

After watching that CNN Sans video two points came to mind
1) It was probably a waste of money if you are having to point out that 'it isn't Helvetica it just looks pretty much the same' in your own promotional video
2) Why did CNN ask someone to give their promo a distinctly Gyles Brandreth-esque voiceover?

Wait a minute... Isn't that Richard Quest doing the VO?

I'm not sure who it is, but I just kept thinking this is exactly how Gyles Brandreth would read this.

They do have similar voices! It could easily be Brandreth on Just a Minute. I'm pretty sure it's Quest though.

It is indeed Quest.
