Actually, viewers in NI are already so familiar with the ITV logo (through GMB, ITV News, ITV Studios end boards and the other ITV-branded channels), that I doubt they'd even notice the 'u' if ITV opted to produce a UTV logo where the 'u' was of the same font and proportion as the 'tv' in the ITV logo.
I meant that if the UTV version became too established, would viewers not still read the ITV version as UTV, if the change was too subtle?

Nowdays, its before regional programming and its namechecked either ITV or 'ITV Cymru Wales' (depends on the network announcer)
Am I right in saying it no longer has Wales and the continuity has gone?

Given that things like "ITV HTV" were specificaly avoided in the past...
...I doubt that anything like your second example would be chosen.

In light of the fact that we have:
ITV News Anglia
ITV News Central
ITV News Channel TV
ITV News Granada Reports
ITV News Meridian
ITV News Tyne Tees...
My point was that "HTV" sort of "clashes" with "ITV" (what with both being three-consecutive-initials with no accompanying spaces and/or whole words etc, and the latter two of those three letters being "TV" in both cases). The "UTV" name therefore "clashes with" the "ITV" name in exactly the same sense that "HTV" would have done.
The regional suffixes in all the programme names you've mentioned are either wholly or partially actual full words, rather than nothing-but-initials. Yes, the "Channel TV" one is a bit clunky, but it's not daft like e.g "ITV News CTV" (or similar) would have been.
So, what I meant was that seeing as other three-letter-abbreviations (e.g. HTV, CTV, etc) being used in the suffix of any name/brand/title that begins with "ITV" have been avoided to date, I'd be surprised for them to suddenly be happy to have a single programme name that contains both "ITV" and "UTV" within its wording now.

The circle will indeed act as a nice substitute to the dot on the 'i' and will allow for a similar circular animation on trails. And as someone else has also pointed out, the proposed design keeps the overall width of the logo roughly in line with that of the 'itv' logo.
Perhaps the reason for the 'tv' in the circle is to keep the animation consistent across the channel? If they were just to replace the i in the normal itv logo with a u, they would have to change the animation for trailers etc.

I still don't see this being an obstacle to ITV News UTV Live. The whole point of these changes is to reinforce the idea of UTV being part of the ITV family now. The naming convention would also be consistent with what they've done in other ITV regions (albeit it does look a bit silly). Introducing an ITV News set and title sequence to UTV Live and leaving out the 'ITV News' branding would be folly.

This is the bit that will really be worth keeping an eye on.
When UTV Live is revamped and comes under the ITV News brand, it'll be very interesting to see if its online news coverage moves to itv.com/news.
The (pointless) duplication of ITV programme content on u.tv (and the UTV Player) has got to be on the hit list too. But will they sunset the u.tv site at the time of the UTV logo refresh or will that come later?
I wonder if ITV will keep the UTV website and all the references to it on network shows or as a compromise launch itv.com/utv?

Yes, and not only that UTV is part of the ITV family, but that its news output is part of the ITV News Group, which brings all the regions under one umbrella (which forms ITV's 40% shareholding in ITN).

When comparing any changes to UTV to changes to the regions up to 14 years ago, people need to remember that ITV isn't run by one bloke Mr ITV who's been running it single handedly since 1955.
It's fair to say that the powers that be are probably 90% different than they were in 2002 so no comparison is valid.
Many companies change branding policies and go from one extreme to the other. Firstgroup being one who have gone from trying to get as many F logos as possible on their trains to now not using their brand at all in the case of GWR.
Creating a version of the ITV logo spelling UTV would never happen, has anything like that ever happened with anything?
The mock above with ITV News/UTV Live is what I fully expect to happen

ITN News: UTV Live is not any more confusing...
I still don't see this being an obstacle to ITV News UTV Live.
What is it with people "responding" to something other than what I ever actually sodding well said?
At no point have I framed my input to this discussion in terms of the possible ITV News UTV Live name being "confusing", or in terms of me seeing there being "obstacles" to its possible use.
People deciding that what-I'm-getting-at is something that the actual words and sentences that I've typed never said, is most perplexing.
Which part of me merely saying that " I'd be surprised if they did such-and-such, because my perception is that they seem to have hitherto avoided doing exactly that" is not clear?

Carlton having Central's cake and eating it is probably the obvious example.

Earlier in this thread, I did suggest that signs at Havelock House, and any other UTV premises, could have the strapline "part of ITV" under them. Obviously, we've now had this new logo, so I just wonder if it'll say on signs at UTV premises "part of ITV". I'm not suggesting it will happen on screen however. I think it would make the ident more cluttered.
I'm also wondering if this rebrand will end IVC.
