Is it just me in that I find it slightly strange that each Home Nations have different News quotas? Surely the good people of Border Scotland deserve as much News as Northern Ireland? Obviously England is different due to the National News being based (and many would say biased) towards it...but surely the other Home Nations deserve equal more localised News (and other) programming?
The current programmes (on weekdays certainly) I'd say serve Border Scotland well. Lookaround runs out of steam about half way through, with non-news dominating the last 15 - 10 minutes and I'd say the other bulletins are detailed enough. It's just weekends that are the problem really. The minute population (and news) means extra content, which would be nice, would be rather pointless.

Don't forget Representing Border isn't on when the Scottish Parliament is in recess. The extra minutes help cover these periods when it isn't on at all so it averages out at the required amount across the year.

I think that's the logical fallacy of our age really. England's much larger than the rest, so a disproportionate amount of generic-but-not-specifically-English national news stories will naturally occur that will have taken place south of the Tweed, and east of the dyke. So, some fluff piece about some boring London-based celebrity is not going to be any more or less relevant to someone in Chester-le-Street, than it will be to someone in Kelso... or even Hackney probably. I just don't buy that England has less need for local content than the rest of the UK. The fact it has less is a political consideration so it looks like the rest of the UK has a comparatively good deal. The BBC had that attitude towards the South East (even as far from London as Oxfordshire) for a long time and even that was stupid, let alone England-wide.

Or because there's no real point in doing them. Yes they could broadcast 10 different idents simultaneously before every programme, it would cost nothing, but really who does that benefit?

Again were not talking about idents here, I fail to understand why you keep on highlighting this point, Im on about the news services/Local TV and websites.

The conversation I replied to quite clearly specified 'regional identities'

The IBA had the right idea. Regional content quotas were proportional to potential audience size, simple as that. Therefore, for instance, ATV/Central had a decent amount of regional programming. Mind you, in London Thames particularly were rather lazy, LWT did a better job at least with non news regional programming.

To be fair non news was the only regional programming LWT produced until they were forced to

I cant remember there being much local shows made by central? expect that motor show. Of course didn't alot of said go to other stations?

Despite the company employing around 90 journalists for its current affairs output, such as Weekend World and The London Programme. The only other local shows where Weekend show, six o'clock show and Sunday Sunday( that was forced by the company)

STV are at least trying stuff, and doing joint production with US companies, looking at Scotland scammer, vet school in Edinburgh, cooking with Scottish chefs etc. I just wish there would bring back New found land, which was 10, 30mins drama slots for anyone to try... Im sure UTV are buying in STV stuff as local.
