For some reason, hearing this theme would really scare me as a young kid. I have absolutely no idea why.

The Channel 4 American Football ident...

I know I'm far from alone with this one. I think what makes it unsettling is that not only is it really weird looking to begin with but it remains eerily still as the Channel 4 music (kind of haunting in itself) plays out, unlike in the normal idents where the blocks move about. Then, when the music finishes, it pants. Utterly creepy.

Also, as a young child, I couldn't make out what it was actually supposed to me. I can now see that it is a 4 logo on an angle wearing a helmet and holding a ball in its left 'hand'. As a kid it just looked like a jumbled mess of blocks with a helmet on top and a ball at the bottom.

What scared me as a kid was after at least one of the episodes you would get a silent insert before the credits saying one of the contestants had died - being about 6 years old back then I thought they had been killed due to the heat of the Aztec zone rather than anything in real life!

I recall some of my classmates didn't like this much...

I found Powder fairly scary as a young child

I was also not a fan on the 1993 BBC News intro, although in my memory the studio was a lot darker and more foreboding than it actually was.

I think the darker, more foreboding news studio was possibly the darker backdrop used for The Nine O'clock News.

Of course, most of what you saw didn't exist in reality, so it wasn't foreboding.

I never did understand why they wanted to create the impression of a 40 foot long desk for one or two presenters in the first place. It's just shouted 'unnecessary waste' to the viewer.

Apparently, BBC News even wanted to originally have a 'real' glass coat of arms, but that was dropped on H&S grounds (amongst others).

Clearly I was allowed to stay up later than I remember.

As a child, I was scared by the title sequence for Tom Tom (no nothing to do with sat navs)

It was a weird, probably drugs induced, programme ! I've Never managed to find any clips of it.

Even later than that, for it became the BBC News at Ten! Well past your bedtime. And mine.

Tales of the Unexpected was one that scared me a bit. And, oddly enough, the original titles for The Bill. Those feet on the beat.

Mastermind. I found both the theme music and the shots of the black chair rather spooky and menacing. "Approaching Menace" is a very apt title for that library track.
