Remembrance Sunday

What do BBC1 and the shopping channels have in common? (November 2009)

I was surprised and very disappointed to see that Remembrance Sunday is of no importance to any of the main channels apart from BBC One - yet the shopping channels managed to mark it.

Is this right?

No expenses spared on The Jewellery channel then Rolling Eyes - at least they observed it though.

And as much as I feel you should have observed the silence, I'm not going to flame you for flicking through the channels during it, because I'm nice like that.

I realise that this is the time the guns fell silent, but people can observe a silence at any time, many may have chosen to do so while watching the service from the Royal Albert Hall last night.

And I have the greatest respect for our war veterans, I even donated £3 when I got my poppy, when I don't usually put much in charity boxes.

I'm afraid I'm old fashioned and believe the two minutes silence should be observed... not just by broadcasters but across the board. But when?

When I were a lad, it wasn't a problem. The only two minutes silence was on Remembrance Sunday. BBC1 would be covering the Cenotaph, ITV would have Sunday Worship and BBC2 would normally be closed or showing the OU. Same with C4 in its early years.

Then BBC2 and C4 started to open on Sunday mornings and kept on going... and other channels came on board.

And since 1995 there's been ambiguity about when to officially observe the silence. Is it on Remembrance Sunday? Or is it, once again, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month?

I think ITV1 generally observe the silence on the 11th November, as an ITV News insert to This Morning

I'm surprised BBC2 didn't observe the silence today, it's one thing continuing with recorded programming, but another when there is a live show taking place.

Manchester's Metrolink service (operated by Stagecoach) have put decals of poppies on most of their older-style trams and held all services at 11am for two minutes across the network which I thought was really good.

The Manchester Wheel (kinda like the London Eye but smaller) also has poppies on each 'pod'.

Am surprised that ITV didn't mark it at all, especially with the fuss they made last year with the 'Hero' Help for Heroes/Royal British Legion single that the X Factor released. There was even a 'premiere' of the video at 5pm!

But lest we forget - our boys have done well - and we'll remember all those that we lost.

For the last few years the official mark of silence has been on the 11th (as it should be), not on the Sunday. I think you'll find the main channels will observe it on Wednesday.

At least there did mark it, even if it was cheap

Yes, Armistice Day returned to prominence a few years ago (I think it was 1995, the 50th anniversary of the end of WW2) and since then there has been the confusion over the traditional Remembrance Sunday and the 11/11. There's no convention but it seems that 11/11 is the 2 minutes silence that everyone observes and the one on the Sunday is just for those at the many services that take place.

To be honest I think there should be just one silence on either the 11/11 or the Sunday to provide more focus

most workplaces will mark it on Wednesday, remember at work years ago an office collegue deciding the one two minute silence would be a good time to get some printing done Rolling Eyes

This morning do it at 11 with the news but presenters have commented that non of the traffic stops on the Embankment

Bet some prat will try ringing me at work at 11AM.

I've got an answerphone on my works line, but it's not easy to turn off, unless I pull the leccy plug out!

No harm in emphasising the cause by doing the two minutes silence twice.

But don't you think it dilutes the message?

Some people observe 2 minutes silence on the Sunday, others on the 11th, some twice, some not at all. Far better for the British Legion to make up their mind and announce which is the official nationally observed silence so everyone can focus on that and there's no confusion.
