It's almost that time again! Friday 24 March is Red Nose Day 2017!

Interestingly this year, Red Nose Day will be coming from Building 6 at The o2, which from a very hazy memory of a night out is more like a nightclub than a theatre or studio. I can't imagine it will be seated, which might make for a funny atmosphere - and not funny haha.

Sir Lenny Henry, Joe Lycett, Romesh Ranganathan, Jonathan Ross, Jonny Vegas and French & Saunders are set to host, with Graham Norton bringing his chat show along too.

Nice mix of old and new comedy faces. Particularly pleased to see French & Saunders return. Not so pleased to hear Vic and Bob are going to be resurrecting some of their most 'popular' characters, but that's just down to personal taste.

Good to see them returning to comedians hosting rather than the presenters of late - even regular Davina McCall is ousted - though not too sure about the slot after the news essentially being a chat show - that be better at the end of the night IMO.

The Radio Times says the hosts are: Sir Lenny Henry, Joe Lycett, Miranda Hart, Rob Beckett, Romesh Ranganathan, Warwick Davis, Sally Phillips, Greg Davies, Jonathan Ross and French & Saunders.

Thing is though, presenters are generally better at keeping a live television show together than a comedian, especially when things take a turn for the unexpected.
I remember one year Ant and Dec presented a segment of Comic Relief pretty much as an episode of Takeaway and it was a brilliant bit of Telly and damn funny to boot.

Which is what made the early Comic Reliefs so good. Would much rather watch the modern day equivalent of the 80s Griff Rhys Jones, Lenny Henry and Jonathan Ross bumbling through the night than experienced presenters polishing over the cracks

I've seen footage of the 89 red nose day which invovled the presenters (and a puppet dog) presenting from a bed... which was bizarre.

Worth noting that the US version is on May 25. No other details have been released by NBC.

Wasn't that Gordon the Gopher?!

No it was a dog. Iirc it was from some film at the time, maybe a Henson production?
EDIT: it was the dog from The Storyteller:

Presenting from a bed, or at least in pyjamas was a regular thing in the first few comic reliefs I seem to remember

I'm guessing Roy Skelton wasn't available for Zippy & George?

Today is Friday 24 March 2017 - Red Nose Day 2017. Yes folks, another odd-numbered year means that twice-yearly fundraising extravaganza for Comic Relief has come around again. Quite frankly though, as far as I'm concerned, today looks set to be just another plain, ordinary Friday. I'm certainly not going to do anything silly with my hair or face, which is what people have been encouraged to do on Red Nose Day in past years, e.g. the Big Hair Do in 2003 or "Make your face funny for money". A few times in the run-up to today, most recently yesterday early evening, I looked at the range of Red Nose Day 2017 T-shirts in TK Maxx, Bath. In all honesty, I'm not overly keen on any of their designs this time, and therefore I've decided not to buy any of them. The only ones I felt slightly swayed towards were the dog Albert or the horse Charlie, however I didn't like them enough to want to buy them. I was even in two minds this morning about whether or not to put on one of my older Red Nose Day T-shirts, but anyway, I'm wearing my RND 2015 T-shirt (the red Oscar Wilde one, designed by Anya Hindmarsh), which I bought two years ago.

This evening I've no intention of watching the Red Nose Day TV Show on BBC One. Each odd-numbered year since about 2003 I've watched it off-air until late (usually midnight) and the rest on video next day. Looking back, I don't know how I tolerated sitting through them, because each time I thought the shows were predominantly a load of utter stupidity and tommyrot. Many of the sketches over the years have been terrible (e.g.. Simon Cowell's wedding in 2013, Mr. Bean at the funeral in 2015). Unlike Children in Need TV shows in November, the Red Nose Day TV shows over the years featured very few pop songs (nowhere near enough for my liking); however in 2009 there was a Top of the Pops Red Nose Day special on BBC Two whilst the 10 o'Clock News was on BBC One. If the last few odd-numbered years are anything to go by, tonight's Red Nose Day TV show will be just as bad.

For those of you who are fundraising for Red Nose Day 2017 today, happy fundraising.
