and well into 1982 on ATV schools' programmes with a filmed "Central Presents" cap crudely tagged on to the front.

An example of this is here:

it wasn't "tacked on". "Central Presents an ATV production" was done live and on the fly as and when needed and I believe it only appeared on the schools programmes.

Yes - and the ATV endcaps were left intact, whereas the practice outside school hours was to add the Central frontcap and endcaps live to programmes made before 1982. Family Fortunes 1982 series was an example, and flashes of the ATV endcap were frequently seen.

In 1985 all ATV schools programmes were re-edited with Central frontcaps and endcaps, and some of these were still being shown in the 90s!

Wasn't the Central Ident sometimes played in live too? I think the reason it wasn't on Challenge's showings of Series 1 of Blockbusters, and wasn't on a lot of Monkhouse & Bygraves episodes of Family Fortunes (and was silent on many of the episodes it was on) is because they weren't on the master tapes.

Plausible, though it may well be that since they may be new prints supplied to Challenge there's always the opportunity to chop them off by accident or otherwise.

Closinglogos.com (no idea on reliability) suggests the Central frontcap (the first logo) for Family Fortunes "is preserved on most episodes of the 1983/84 season of Family Fortunes, as well as the second series of Bullseye on Challenge. On episodes of Family Fortunes on the 83 season, the logo is either silent, or has a very muted version of the jingle playing. On episodes of Bullseye, the logo plays in a low tone, most probably to go with the pitch of the show's theme tune."

I seem to remember it came up at the time on their Facebook page, and the tapes still had the original Central VT clocks on, which would suggest the frontcaps were never there. Unless they went to the effort of keeping the original VT clock but cutting out the frontcap immediately following, which would seem like a silly amount of hassle.

The muted frontcap on Family Fortunes was also clearly how it was on the original tapes as well, as on a few episodes with you had the applause and the start of the theme tune playing while the frontcap was still on-screen.

It wouldn't surprise me really if 1982/3 Central mixed and matched things and just made them up as they went along which in the history of things makes it look inconsistent.

After all, by the 1990s the presentation package in the Central region was so varied, random and diversified the only thing it had in common with it all was the presence of the Central cake. Anything could have come and gone in the 15 seconds prior to seeing a cake.

As I mentioned above, during the 1982 Monkhouse series of FF, the Central ident was certainly played in live. On one occasion they accidentally cut from the ident to the Central announcer's booth instead of the show, and the whole network saw Mike Prince or someone getting up off his chair!

I'm sure as a very young child, watching STV one day in the early 1980s, and a Central Presents logo came up before a normal, i.e. not schools programme. The ATV ident then came in.

That also happened, I think mainly for Crossroads or Family Fortunes.

Crossroads episodes that were already in the can prior to the name change tended to have a 'Central Presents' slide straight into the programme, ie. no Central or ATV ident. Though I have heard of the ATV ident being seen on non-schools programming, I don't remember it myself.
