Oh goodness that was terrible.

Jesus Christ, what a memory that is. Every time I look at a plug socket I think of that programme - perhaps I'm a bit odd, but I presume (and hope, for my sanity's sake) the title sequence involved a plug socket somewhere.

Regrettably I couldn't tell you, the entire affair was soul destroyingly dull. Mind you Nerys did teach me how to fold a flag -- a skill I still have today.

There's an old trail for it on the BBC's site [from the Judi Spiers era I'm far too young to remember of course].

The filter seems to have disagreed with the word <clothes show> for some reason.

What I find funny now is the way some regions split the national and regional news by putting Home and Away on at 6pm, seems strange thesedays, and also put the ITV Regional news head to head with the BBC.

The way the afternoons showed national programming but at different times also looks odd these days, did they just cobble together the schedule or what. Although people complain about the lack of regional variations thesedays, most of these were just for the sake of it

As I mentioned above, in the mid-90s it was usually the same episode of shows like Chain Letters and the Corrie repeats going out, whereas with the purchased programmes (the endless Aussie soaps, for example) generally speaking each region was at a different stage in the storyline (though Border took Granada's episodes of some shows).
With Shortland Street this has always been the case - I think HTV was six months behind Central for example.

AFAIK Home & Away was the same episode in each region although that's because the programme was "looked after" by Carlton (ie they had the deals with Seven) who then sent tapes to the regions. (Which is why all regions had the same scenes cut from the show and they were forced to drop the two episodes in 1996 and 1998 that they did drop - although Central were known to further regionally edit it on occasions.)

But with everything else it was done on a regional basis.

HTV were a lot more than 6 months behind Central with Shortland Street, more like 2 years. Yorkshire/Tyne Tees were even further behind than HTV were, about 3 years behind Central but Carlton/London were the furthest behind and they dropped the show about 18 months in. YTV/TTTV also only got about 2 years into SS before cancelling it, which meant HTV was the furthest behind from then onwards. Central were the region which "looked after" Shortland Street and AFAIK the same edited versions of SS were shown on HTV (and YTV/TTTV) as Central showed years earlier. Central went through a period of editing the episodes from 23 minutes down to 20 minutes and this was the case in all regions who showed it when they reached that batch of episodes.

With A Country Practice, I think Carlton were the region which took responsibilty for this as I remember Carlton edited the closing credits like they did with Home and Away, and the change happened in all regions when they reached that particular episode. Carlton were the furthest ahead out of the regions so im assuming they supplied the tapes for the other regions. Central were years behind HTV with ACP, I remember when I went to Central land they were ahead with SS and behind with ACP.

ITV let the regions do their own thing in the afternoons. There were some programmes which all regions showed like quiz shows (chain letters etc) and Home and Away, and most regions took either or both A Country Practice, Shortland Street. But they were obviously allowed to schedule these programmes in which ever slot they wished. I often wondered with Central had Shortland Street at 5.10pm and ACP at 1pm and the exact opposite on HTV.

Still - you wouldn't find the afternoons being regionally scheduled these days, or out with the soaps.

AFAIK UTV were a day behind with Crossroads MK2 for a while.

Thanks for posting those schedules, guys. It was great to see some of the programmes I used to love. Does anyone remember Going For Gold with Henry Kelly? I used to love that programme! For anyone who doesn't remember, it was a gameshow where Europeans competed against each other. That theme tune was so catchy!

Oh yes I remember it well - when it first started (about 1987?) I often went home for lunch and would watch it then. My main memory of it is Kelly's questioning technique which often began, "what am I?". We used to think of plenty of "amusing" answers to that one Laughing

Thanks for that - it brought back so many memories! Those were brilliant opening titles, weren't they? I loved the lyrics as well:

"Going for Gold.
The heat is on, the time is right,
It's time for you, for you to play your game.
'Cause people are coming,
Everyone's trying,
Trying to be the best that they can,
When they're going for, going for gold!"

Moving on... Anyone remember Turnabout (the replacement for Going for Gold) with Rob Curling? Laughing What a gameshow!

Yeah that was a great quiz show. Does anyone remember 'Catchword' every afternoon on BBC2 in the 4pm slot and 'Todays the Day'.
BBC2 ran a great selection of quiz shows long before the likes of 'Flog It?' and 'Animal Park' came on the scene and took over the schedules Laughing
